Having launched in October 2018, the Marcus Intalex Music Foundation have set in motion events, workshops and outreach projects to honour the legacy of the DJ, producer and label founder their existence commemorates. Next weekend sees their WK:END project sweep the city, with Sunday’s closing party taking place here at Band on the Wall.
The closing event runs from 6pm ‘til midnight, with esteemed DJs Floating Points and Jon K (NTS radio/Eyes Down renown) behind the decks. The former, a neuroscience whiz, keys player, label founder and producer also known as Sam Shepherd, recently suggested in an interview that he owns 8-9,000 records, so you can be certain that he’ll be selecting from a mighty fine pool of records on the night.
Prior to the closing party, Shepherd sits down with DJ and writer Dave Haslam for an artist Q&A, in which he’ll pick out, play, and discuss the records that have influenced his life and music.
Many of those records tie into Shepherd’s record label, Melodies. As he explained to Echo Daily this week, ‘I started it because I noticed some of the records I was playing becoming increasingly valuable in secondhand circles. I was in touch with some of the musicians of these records, purely out of adoration. It seemed like a no-brainer to help reissue their records so that they’re not only affordable, but also so the original musician can benefit from it’.
It was an attitude similar to Sam’s that saw Marcus Intalex helping artists to monetise their craft, giving up-and-coming producers and DJs guidance and opportunities, sometimes with slots at his Soul:ution club night and other times in the studio or with a 12” release. As Glenn Herweijer of Artificial Intelligence told us last year, ‘I originally met Marcus as a teenager and we were close throughout the earlier years, prior to him setting up Soul:r. He was one of the main influences and reasons that we started producing together and also signed our very first track Ever On’.
It’s in the spirit of Marcus’ actions that foundation continue his musical legacy. WK:END looks set to be the first of many celebratory events of its kind and we’re excited to host the closing bash on Sunday 24th February.
