N’dambi 29th March 2010

With her emotive contralto voice, Dallas soul vocalist N’dambi fuses the gospel influences of her childhood (her parents were Baptist ministers) with the R&B, soul and funk of greats such as Earth, Wind & Fire, Ohio Players and The Bar-Kays.

She is the ninth of eleven children born to a Baptist minister and missionary. Her family is from Memphis, Tennessee, but she and her siblings were reared in Dallas. Her father was both a minister and singer in an quartet, which led to N’dambi becoming enamoured with singing. She got her professional start singing with Gaye Arbuckle, a local gospel singer and toured with her from age 18 to 20. Shortly thereafter she sang as background singer and collaborated with fellow Texan Erykah Badu.

Filmed by the Band on the Wall AV Unit on 29 March 2010.
