Dennis Bovell ‘Oh Mama Oh Papa’ 12th March 2010

This performance by Dennis Bovell was a highlight of Band on the Wall’s acclaimed 2010 series of concerts by famous reggae artists.

Barbados-born Bovell is a vocalist, producer, composer and multi instrumentalist. He moved to London with his family when he was 12, and has been active on the UK reggae and dub scene since a teenager.

Since then he has had a highly successful and diverse musical career, from the days with Jah Sufferer Sound System and his seminal band Matumbi. He has been at the forefront of reggae and dub in the UK and is known for his attempting the fusion of disco rhythms with reggae. A long-time collaborator with poet Linton Kwesi Johnson, he has also engineered and produced a long list of successful albums, from Marvin Gaye and Fela Kuti to The Slits.

In this excerpt he performs one of his many songs, Oh Mama Oh Papa, singing and playing bass guitar.
