Freelance Opportunity  

Mother Song, Father Song Music Leader 

Fee: £1,625 per Music Leader
Terms: £125 per 2-hour session (12 delivery, 1 planning)  

Timescale: January –April 2025 (with the possibility of extension to June) 

Project Outline 

World of Song is a two-year programme of music and heritage activities delivered by Band on the Wall and Community Arts North West, engaging people who are at different stages of the migration experience, including asylum seekers, refugees, and new migrants.   

Mother Song, Father Song is one of six projects in the World of Song series. Mother Song, Father Song will invite men currently housed in emergency hotel accommodation to weekly drop-in sessions, where they can share their music and participate in workshops. 

These will happen on Wednesday afternoons, with two music leaders guiding and supporting participants in these sessions. We will create a safe and welcoming environment for people to participate in a universal aural tradition and share stories and experiences through song. Instruments can be made available such as guitar, percussion and keyboards. 

CAN and Band on the Wall will explore opportunities for the group to be involved in some capacity at the Horizons Festival 2025.  

Job Description 

We are seeking two enthusiastic and talented Music Leaders to lead on delivering these sessions. This is a sustained and rewarding opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of people new to the city and to offer them a safe space to share and create music.  

This opportunity will be open to men hosted in emergency accommodation who may or may not have musical experience. These will be drop-in sessions so we will not always have the same participants each week. 

The music leader will be proactive and flexible, very committed to people’s wellbeing and be able to work with a diverse range of musical styles and influences. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Lead engaging and interactive music sessions  
  • Create a supportive and safe environment where all participant’s contributions are valued and empower them to feel confident to express themselves creatively 
  • Encourage participants to share their ideas and music

This project has the potential to make a significant difference to the lives of people who have recently arrived in the UK, some in very difficult circumstances.  We therefore ask and expect that all collaborators commit to the following;

  • An absolute commitment to attend all agreed project sessions punctually  
  • To ensure all sessions are well planned and inclusive 
  • To ensure that sessions create a safe space   
  • To contribute to evaluation 

Who we are looking for 

Essential 

  • Strong leadership and facilitation skills. 
  • A strong track-record of engaging and inspiring people. 
  • Experience of working on creative projects with people new to Manchester 
  • Ability to work creatively with diverse musical heritages  
  • Strong musicianship 
  • Ability to work by ear 
  • A reflective approach to your work 
  • A commitment to anti-racist practice  
  • Ability to communicate clearly and simply. 
  • Ability to work sensitively and responsively to people whose lives may be complex. 
  • Current enhanced DBS check or registration with the DBS update service*  

Desirable 

  • Safeguarding training* 
  • Ability to play a range of instruments  
  • Experience of working on heritage projects  

* You will require an enhanced DBS check and Level 1 adult safeguarding training for this role. If you do not have this, we will ensure a DBS check is completed and you complete online Safeguarding training (paid for by the project) before a full contract is offered.  

Schedule: 

Days: Wednesday afternoons from 14:00-16:00 during term times. 

Timescale: January – June 2025 

Starting date: Wednesday 15th January 2025
