Formed in Wisconsin and later based in Chicago, the members of Slow Pulp share a long history, influencing their intimate and collaborative music-making process. Their journey includes early connections through local music programs, the move to Chicago, and significant challenges. Despite these obstacles, they finished their first album, Moveys, in isolation, with Massey’s father playing a crucial role in recording her vocals, a practice continued on Yard. Themes of isolation, self-discovery, and trust permeate the album, with songs like “Gone 2” and “Doubt” reflecting struggles with self-validation and finding love within oneself. The album concludes with “Fishes,” a contemplative track inspired by Massey’s solitude and reflections at a lakeside cabin, encapsulating the journey toward self-acceptance.
