A classic night of superlative music as we present this wonderful trio featuring three of British Jazz’s most loved and respected artists.

Norma Winstone is one of British jazz’s most admired singers and lyricists. In a career spanning over 40 years she is best known for her wonderful, wordless vocal improvisations. Winstone began singing in bands in the early 1960s, before joining Michael Garrick’s band in 1968. Her first recording came the following year, with Joe Harriott.  She has worked with most of her peers in British jazz including Garrick, Mike Westbrook and her former husband, the pianist John Taylor. With Taylor and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler she has performed and recorded three albums as a member of the trio Azimuth between 1977 and 1980. Norma Winstone was awarded the MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours of 2007 for her services to Music

Over the last few years pianist Nikki Iles has progressed into the front rank of British jazz musicians but she began composing as part of Emanon, led by trumpeter Richard Iles, which also included the guitarist Mike Walker and saxophonist Iain Dixon. Since then she has gone from strength to strength, winning  the John Dankworth Special Award at the BT British Jazz Awards in 1996. Recent playing highlights in the last couple of years have included The Julian Arguelles Octet, The Kenny Wheeler Big Band, The Anglo Canadian Project, Toronto with Kenny Wheeler, The Printmakers with Norma Winstone and Mike Walker and Martin Speake’s ECM tour.

Jazz tenor saxophonist Mark Lockheart came to prominence as a member of the Loose Tubes big band during the 1980s. Subsequently he played with Django Bates well as in the group Perfect Houseplants featuring Dudley Phillips & Martin France. His own group the In Deep Quintet featured Liam Noble and Jasper Holiby and his founded  his latest 7-piece group, Ellington In Anticipation, in 2012. He has also played in sessions with Radiohead, Prefab Sprout, Stereolab and plays in British jazz quintet Polar Bear.
