Week 1 of a 10 week course
Learn and develop Jazz Improvisation techniques and style at Band on the Wall.
The course is for players (all instruments) and singers who want to learn the art and fundamental techniques of Jazz Improvisation in a practical, structured and progressive course. Starting at beginner and intermediate level participants will explore easy ways into soloing, develop rhythmic improvisation skills and aural confidence. The sessions are run in groups and will be practical, supportive non-formal and relaxed!
The course is for players who have the basic skills (approximately equivalent to grade 3 and up) on their instrument, which could be anything from brass, wind, strings or voice. Reading skills are not required (though they may be helpful).
More experienced players with some jazz improvisation skills will develop their timing, jazz language, phrasing and style with more complex harmonies including cycle of fourths and simple turnarounds, more challenging keys and faster tempos.
Tutor Darren Lloyd has performed as lead and jazz trumpet with many great bands including James Morrison, BBC Big Band, and Tony Coe and is a qualified teacher and experienced workshop leader.
The course is supported by recorded and written resource materials such as backing tracks and lead sheets to aid practice between classes.
Under 16’s are welcome if accompanied by a responsible adult.
