With a career spanning fourty years, and a list of accolades which includes the NEA Jazz Masters lifetime achievement award, Dave Liebman is undoubtedly one of the finest jazz saxophonists on the scene today.

From a crop of supremely talented players who made up the New York loft jazz clique of the early ‘70s, Liebman has played alongside legendary drummer Elvin Jones, studied under Charles Lloyd, and recorded with groundbreaking fusion outfits like Ten Wheel Drive and Lookout Farm, as well as John McLaughlin on his solo material. He realised a dream when he became a part of Miles Davis’ group in 1973, while Davis’ sound explored funkier and freer territory, and since has continued to play with fine jazz artists of a similar pedigree. His composition canon has explored jazz as thoroughly as any other player, with his work never waining at any point during his career.

The Vein trio Formed of twins Michael and Florian Arbinez (piano and drums respectively) and bassist Thomas Lähn, make up the ensemble to perform at Band on the Wall. The album they made with Liebman entitled ‘Jazz Talks’ has received stupendous acclaim, and showed the quality of the group when working together.

“While others of his ‘60s generation have fallen off their ambition, Liebman has remained dogged about composition and trying different styles.” Ben Ratliff (NY Times)

“The encounter between Dave Liebman and Vein must have been forged by a higher power under pressure by the sheer necessity of bringing to life their artistic existence.” Jazz ‘n’ More
