Most famous for the international hit You’re Gorgeous in 1996, Babybird, led by the wonderful Stephen Jones, disbanded after their third album in 2000. Reformed as a three-piece, Jones and his crew are back on the scene with more mood-swinging, eccentric and bursting-at-the-seams melodic pop delight.
Babybird have sold over two million records since the mid-90s, having started writing songs and recording home demos as part of an experimental theatre group in Sheffield. His first collection, I Was Born A Man, was released in 1995 and four further homespun recordings were released in the same year – Bad Shave, Fatherhood, The Happiest Man Alive and Dying Happy. All were N.M.E. top 10 chart hits.
Babybird would later sign to Echo Records and reach number 3 in the U.K.charts with You’re Gorgeous. The album, Ugly Beautiful, also went gold. Stephen Jones has written 3 novels, and is writing a fourth – A Limited Capacity For Wonder. He has also recorded music under his own name and the moniker of Death of the Neighbourhood. Babybird released his 7th studio album, The Pleasures of Self Destruction in 2011 to rave reviews and Band on the Wall welcomes one of pop’s true mavericks to Manchester for this very special concert. Support tonight comes from The Tricks.
