A celebratory opening to this year’s Manchester Jazz Festival: Apitos perform a ‘best of’ selection from their extensive repertoire developed over a 27-year history of championing South American and Cuban music – and return to the home of their earliest gigs.

The joyful sounds and rhythms of Latin America pervade the music of Apitos, whether it’s the clavé-inspired dance rhythms of rumba, cha cha and mambo, the happy feeling of calypso and plena or the beauty of samba, batucada or frevo. The band draws on material from the Latin jazz arrangements of Tito Puente, Poncho Sanchez, Pete Escovedo, as well as a selection of music from their Made in Manchester suite, celebrating à la Cuba the music of Joy Division, The Smiths, Stone Roses, Oasis and many others, with percussion and improvisation to the fore.
