A singer, MC, self-taught keyboardist, and prolific songwriter, her 35 year of career started on the Sugar Hill Records label with 80s funk-hop trio the Sequence and took in work with Vertical Hold, Alicia Keys and Mary J Blige before 1999’s lauded Black Diamond launched a steady solo rise to the upper leagues of classic American R&B. She has become one of neo-soul’s leading lights, providing sharp insight into romantic relationships with her smoky yet up-front voice.
