Rapidly asserting herself as an eloquent and provocative singer-songwriter Zara McFarlane brings her new album ‘If You Knew Her’ to venues across the UK. Released on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood label, this latest offering heralds the arrival of a songwriter and performer of true stature.
Zara is uniquely engaging, deftly combining the intricacies of jazz with a deep soulfulness, melding multiple influences from reggae to pop, folk and blues.
An artist composing original songs, she tells her own stories and demands attention for their daring brilliance. Vocally akin to early Simone and Roberta Flack’s ‘First Take’ and delivered with the power and depth reminiscent of the ‘spiritual jazz’ movement of 70’s black America. With a vibrant stage presence and a dynamic young band, her live performances are not to be missed.
