Premiere: Terence Blanchard’s ‘Bud, Not Buddy’ opens today

Bud, Not Buddy opens today at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington DC. This stunning work features new music by composer and trumpet player Terence Blanchard, first performed at Band on the Wall in September 2016 as part of our inaugural Jazz Directors Series residency and tour.

A key work performed during this residency and tour with Terence Blanchard and Inner City Ensemble was a work-in-progress preview of this stunning five-part suite.

Commissioned by the Kennedy Center and set in 1936, Bud, Not Buddy tells the story of a boy searching for his father guided by a band flyer. Blanchard composed the music for actors and a jazz ensemble adapted from Christopher Paul Curtis’s award-winning book.

Bud, Not Buddy runs until Sunday, 15th January.
