Baron Turbo Charge discuss the history of UK Sound System culture

Friday Night Reggae recently presented ‘They Gonna Talk’, an event in association with Manchester Histories Festival which explored the history of reggae and Sound System culture in Greater Manchester.

One of Greater Manchester’s most significant Sound Systems was Baron Turbo Charge, formed in 1974 by Wizzy Dan and Barzy. It underwent several incarnations as equipment and Sound System members changed, all the while bringing reggae music to the communities of Moss Side and Hulme, and touring across the UK with the Sound System.

In this talk hosted by Dom Blood and Fire, founding members Wizzy Dan and Barzy, plus longstanding MC Money Green, discuss the origins of their Sound System, and the scene that developed across the UK in the mid-to-late 1970’s, as well as talking equipment and transistors, cutting dub plates, the progression from steppas to dancehall in Sound System culture and their roles within the Sound System.
