SNAP! Out of It Workshop in Free Improvisation

  • Tuesday | 13.09.11
  • 7.00pm
  • Band on the Wall
  • Full: £5

The Snap! Out of it workshops in free improvised music welcome all levels of musicianship and musicians who are willing to participate in, explore, and engage in experimental music. Not unlike a walk or a chat with friends, free improvised music is a music that does not know its destination when it starts off. Openness to listening, interaction, and the creative process are central to the music we create.

Whether you are new to playing music or a skilled artist looking for a different experience, Snap workshop sessions provide opportunities to develop your confidence and skills in creative music making. Freely improvised music will often be tagged as experimental, creative or new music, and although hard to define there are some themes we seek to explore to enable musicians to develop their abilities to simply play a music that is not composed.

    * Attentive listening
    * Risk taking from a position of safety
    * Different Dynamics; different dynamics in music and people present
    * Unlearning mechanical methods of music making
    * Explore technical ability and the creative process.
    * Challenge of simplicity
    * Exploration of composition through improvisation

The ideas, philosophies and compositions of great exponents of free improvised music such as John Stevens, plus the work of John Cage, Murray Schaffer and Karlheinz Stockhausen,  will be used as a starting point in the session.

Arrival and registration from 7.00pm, session starts 7.30pm
