We’re Junk Jammin’!

Summer 2012

This Summer, Global Grooves invites you to inject your passion and personality into Junk Jam; the Northwest’s most innovative multi-dimensional street performance adventure yet. With recycled materials at the forefront of the vision, the design process has meandered both grassy hill and concrete jungle for inspiration, gathering a growing team of local artists to create a specially commissioned performance for two high-profile Manchester based events. These performance dates offer two exciting days of street performance featuring handmade recycled costume, beastly percussion beats, uplifting vocal and brass melodies, aerial art, graceful dance, and inventive electronics.

Junk Jam – Horns at Band on the Wall

Led by Tim Chatterton and Howard Jacobs, this section will excite participants and the crowd with a selection of weird and wonderful blown and reed instruments. We are looking for brass players (trumpet, trombone, tuba/bass etc) and reed players (saxes, clarinet, double reeds) to play a selection of wierd and wonderful junk horns. Bring your mouthpiece with you! Tim, who leads the Learning and Participation courses at Band On The Wall, is extremely excited at the prospect of turning his experience to creating arrangements for such ‘out there’ instruments! Howard relishes musical diversity of styles, whether performing his reed specialist skills or exploring authentic Cuban percussion grooves.

Please contact us on learning@bandonthewall.org with details of the instrument you play when you register and we will make you a junkophone to suit!

Days: Wednesdays

Dates: 16th May, Wed 23rd May, Wed 30th May, Sat 9th June (all day, venue tbc)

Performances: Manchester Day Parade on Sunday June 10th (all day) and Manchester Jazz Festival on Sunday 15th July

Times: 7.30-9.30

Junk Jam – Vocals at Band on the Wall

In combination with the percussion and horn arrangements, the voice section will weave in and out of beating drums and startling blown instruments to complete and reinforce Junk Jam’s unique sound.

Also held at Band On The Wall, these three sessions will allow vocalists the platform and structure to devise new material (as well as work on one pre-written arrangement) that will compliment the exciting sights and sounds of the Junk Jam spectacle!

With recycled costumes and specially designed mask wear, all vocalists will feel a sense of belonging to a much greater community of performers as the 160 piece outfit takes to the streets for this year’s Manchester Day Parade and Manchester Jazz Festival.

Led by Audry Mattis. Audrey is well known on the British gospel scene as an award-winning choir director of repute.
