The Selecter

Formed in 1979 and once described as “conspiring to make dancing the only way to walk”,  The Selecter led the ska revival movement, along with 2-tone labelmates, The Specials and Madness. Mixing punk, ska & reggae, their debut album Too Much Pressure successfully reflected the social and political issues of the early Thatcher years in Britain and gave a voice to disaffected youth across the racial divide.

Hands down, Pauline Black possessed the best voice that ever graced a 2-Tone release.  Blessed with a bewitching soprano and dramatic panache, Black’s voice reached plateaus that made every other musical detail sound like part of a backdrop painted just to set the stage for her entrance Rolling Stone Magazine

2011 saw the return of this most vital and visceral ska act, reuniting the original singing duo, the female icon of the 2-tone era Pauline Black and the stylishly charismatic Gaps ‘De Killa’  Hendrickson, who assuredly deliver stunning performances of classic hits like On My Radio, Three Minute Hero, Missing Words and Too Much Pressure alongside new cuts from their new album, for both old and new ska fans. Jaw-droppingly brilliant live, we also present a live set by retro rock recidivists The Last Party followed by Martin The Mod playing out classic and rare rudeboy tunes, this is going to be a killer of a night so whatever you do get your tickets early and see you for some rudeboy dance action at the front!

This event begins at 9pm but our Picturehouse Cafe Bar is open from 5.30pm.
