Cutting his teeth playing in the bands of both Duke Ellington and Miles Davis as a young man, Garrett has pursued a critically-acclaimed career that’s included being a member of jazz supergroup the Five Peace Band (also featuring Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Christian McBride and Brian Blade/Vinnie Colaiuta), and performing alongside artists such as Art Blakey, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders, Marcus Miller, Herbie Hancock, Bobby Hutcherson, Ron Carter, Elvin Jones, and Mulgrew Miller. Considered one of the world’s finest alto sax players, he is performing at Band on the Wall with his acclaimed trio. Garrett has an exceptional breadth of vision (including, for instance, flavouring some of his compositions with traditional Japanese and a Korean folk songs), yet never sacrifices his edgily passionate post-Coltrane sax sensibility and emotional and technical edge. This very special concert supports the release of his new album Seeds From The Underground (released April 2012)
“Garrett is unequalled as the modern master of the alto sax…Jazz is a higher purpose, and a player of Garrett’s stature reminds us of that”
The Independent ****
“Someone should post a storm warning prior to a Kenny Garrett concert”
The Washington Post
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Due to Visa difficulties, Kenny Garrett Quartet pianist Benito Gonzales is unable to make tomorrow night’s concert at Band on the Wall. Kenny Garrett will now be performing with his trio featuring Corcoran Holt on bass and McClenty Douglas on drums – giving the Manchester audience the opportunity to enjoy this artist in a trio format, a setting Kenny loves but seldom gets to perform.
