In January 2012, Band On The Wall’s Picturehouse Bar began hosting a fortnightly free acoustic night, showcasing the goldmine of unsigned musical talent in Manchester and the surrounding area. One year on, The Sunday Sessions has grown into one of the most well-established and well-respected nights on the Manchester acoustic scene.
With free open mic slots from 6.30pm and fantastic headline acts from 9pm, players and appreciators alike are guaranteed the best possible musical end to the week.
Possessing of one of the most powerful and distinctive voices on the Manchester music scene, when Robert John let’s forth a roar, or plummets ominously into his seemingly bottomless low register, the ground seems to quake with barely-harnessed passion. Perfectly augmented by Kevin Morel’s percussion and backing vocals, Rob’s solo material has an intense, brooding quality which draws the listener in and seems to grab hold of your very bones.
The Ello are Lila and Olivia Hutchinson, a pair of prodigiously talented musical sisters from Huddersfield. Singer-songwriter Lila, who took the Sunday Sessions open mic by storm in 2012, will be joined for this headline set by jazz vocalist Olivia, with the result being a rich, soulful blend of super-tight harmonies and catchy tunes, reminiscent of the great female vocal groups of the ’60s.
