Shakatak are one of Britain’s most enduring and distinctive jazz-funk bands, celebrated for their sophisticated blend of jazz, funk, soul and pop. Formed in London in 1980 by keyboard player and composer Bill Sharpe and guitarist Roger Odell, the group quickly developed a unique sound built around infectious grooves, melodic keyboards, polished musicianship and an unmistakable sense of style.
Their breakthrough came with the instrumental single “Steppin’,” which became a club favourite and established Shakatak as an exciting new force on the British jazz-funk scene. Further success followed with “Night Birds” and “Down on the Street,” while the albums Night Birds and Invitations cemented their international reputation. Their music crossed effortlessly between the dance floor, jazz clubs and mainstream radio, earning them a devoted audience around the world.
Throughout their career, Shakatak have remained remarkably prolific, releasing numerous albums and singles while touring extensively across the UK, Europe, Japan and beyond. Their sophisticated instrumental sound has also made them particularly influential in the worlds of jazz-funk, smooth jazz and contemporary groove music.
