Miller Live comes to Band on the Wall. A special showcase featuring live performances from Manchester’s Jesca Hoop, The Paris Riots & Golden Glow.
Jesca Hoop was born in Southern California to strict Mormon parents. She grew up singing traditional folk tunes in four-part harmony, but soon broke away from this background, becoming a homesteader and working with children. As a nanny for Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan’s three children, Hoop gained both musical experience and notoriety; Waits said of Jesca, ‘Her music is like going swimming in a lake at night’. Following exposure through radio station KCRW, Jesca toured with Polyphonic Spree, Mark Knopfler, Andrew Bird and Elbow – with Guy Garvey also dueting with Hoop on acclaimed 2009 album Hunting My Dress. Jesca released her latest EP Snowglobe earlier this year on the back of a US tour with The Eels.
Check out this great video of Jesca from Band on the Wall in 2010:
From early bluesy experiments The Paris Riots have developed a distinctive, heavy yet deeply melodic sound veering between the raw and the beautiful, the exuberant and the melancholy, the grandiose and the intimate – laced with distorted crackle, pointed riffs and dense textures. Passionate, urgent and intense live performances with singer Toby Connor’s accentuated phrasing and posturing stage persona has seen them build a fiercely loyal fan-base radiating from their hometown of Manchester across the UK.
Manchester’s Golden Glow (aka ex-Lead Balloon frontman Pierre Hall) produces beautiful songs imbued with a lo-fi, contemplative sensibility that is as raw as it is beautiful. Appearing here on the back of his Mush Records album release Tender Is The Night.
