Band on the Well welcomes the return of one of the biggest driving forces of contemporary Scandinavian jazz and one third of the legendary group e.s.t, Magnus Öström.

Magnus Öström born May 3rd, 1965 in Skultuna, Sweden is the congenial power drummer of the legendary Esbjörn Svensson trio ‘e.s.t.’

In 1991, Magnus and Esbjörn Svensson started e.s.t. and the rest is a huge emotional history. e.s.t. developed into the most important European jazz band of their time, which succeeded in inspiring a completely new audience for their music with a mixture of irresistible melodies, almost hypnotic grooves, an impressive stage presence and the combination of jazz elements with pop and electronics.

Together they recorded 12 albums and one concert DVD, toured the world several times over, sold hundreds of thousands of albums, and was titled the ”trio of the decade”. Nowadays e.s.t. is considered to have been the most influential band in jazz in the noughties and the album Live in Hamburg has been awarded ”Album of the Decade” by no less than The Times (UK).

The career of e.s.t. ended at its peak with the tragic accidental death of the pianist Esbjorn Svensson on June 14, 2008. In 2011 the first musical signs of life by Magnus Öström appeared after the tragedy. The hauntingly gloomy sound of the debut album, which draws on jazz, progressive rock, drum’n’bass and minimal music, is an attempt to artistically process a great loss and at the same time Magnus Öström’s step back into (musical) life.

The album was nominated for the Swedish GRAMMY. Öström also received for the album the German ECHO Jazz 2012 as the best drummer internationally.

In his own quartet, Öström relies on the proven musicians Andreas Hourdakis on guitar and Thobias Garbielson on bass and pianist Daniel Karlsson.

With his trio Rymden, Magnus Öström, again alongside Dan Berglund and also with Bugge Wesseltoft on piano and synthesizers, has succeeded in returning to the top piano trio in Europe. His own compositions also characterize the sound of the 2 albums and numerous live EPs.

After 7 years it’s time for a new journey with the Magnus Öström Group. In 2023 the 4th album of the Magnus Öström Group will be released.
