Killjoy Promotions Presents – Under The Radar: An evening of live music featuring the best and boldest from the Northwest and beyond, live on our bar stage.

This instalment brings you YAANG, NARA and The Strangerz

YAANG

From inception the trio have presented genre-fluid, distorted soundscapes echoed by their performative live sets, creating an immersive experience that’s conquered many an audience. YAANG had a productive lockdown. There was the movement of adding guitar and bass to their synth-based set-up, the addition of a third member: Ben White (formerly of Working Men’s Club); the release of their track Security Dave, which included a remix version by London-based trio, PVA; their inclusion on four compilation releases – Slow Dance ‘20, Group Therapy Vol.2, The Big Plan and M1 – and (once we emerged back to normality), a support slot alongside Porij for their sold-out show at Salford’s iconic The White Hotel venue; and their first ventures outside of their native Manchester, with various headline dates at The Social, The Old Blue Last and Dream Bags Jaguar Shoes in London.

More recently, YAANG have released White Socks Yellow, including a remix from Manchester-based rapper Algernon Cornelius which received notable coverage and response from BBC Introducing and The Rodeo Magazine. The latter of which invited the band to headline the magazine’s debut live event – a four-act billing in the YES basement. This show sold out and has since resulted in a live performance studio recording at Low Four Studios, courtesy of their team.

NARA

Formed in Manchester 2018 by Daniel Brown, Matt Casey, Ethan Van Sheehan and Harry Catchpole. NARA went into Manchester’s rehearsal rooms with a mission toward integrity and earnestness

NARA’s introduction came with their debut single “Fashion”. Recorded at The Nave studios, with an indie-dance groove and bombastic attitude that would move any sticky-floored venue crowd in the city. They then followed this up with “Up The Walls” (April 2022), with a decisively grittier, relentless energy that resonated with Manchester’s vibrant and exciting post-Punk scene. Shedding the innocence of their debut and showing they are a band not afraid of change and experimentation.

January 2023 will see the release of the band’s most honest and exciting effort yet: ‘Me!’. chronicling the singer’s concurrent issues with addiction and an abusive relationship, the song details the frustration, vulnerability and raw emotion of early adulthood setting a clear precedent of sincerity for the future

The Strangerz

Band from Doncaster South Yorkshire, but now based in Manchester. A DIY MAG & BBC featured outfit. Self-described shouty, feminist punk, with bending hook-laden guitar lines paired with viscous drums and vocals that make a genre-breaking loose, raw and ragged sound. The Strangerz are defiantly leftfield with a distinct groove, and hard-hitting sometimes nonsensical lyrics. The band are made up of a pair of twins ( singer Martha and her guitarist brother Thomas) and their housemates ( drummer Shannon & bassist Will).
