Band on the Wall and Humble Soul resurrect Manchester’s legendary folk and acoustic night for this special extended concert featuring Sam Carter plus Liam Bailey, Nancy Elizabeth, Aidan Smith and Cortina Deluxx.
Hedge was Manchester’s leading folk and acoustic night for four years, running as a monthly event at The Carlton Club in Whalley Range, plus occasional special events and the Hedgefest summer festival at St Margaret’s Church. Conceived, curated and hosted by Jojo Thorne, the nights were packed to the rafters, and saw incredible performances from acts such as James Yorkston, John Smith, Lou Rhodes, The Accidental, Nancy Elizabeth, Martha Tilston, The Miserable Rich and many, many more.
After a sabbatical of just over a year, Hedge is returning on Saturday 15th January 2011 for a very special show at Band On The Wall, with a line up that will see the first Manchester headline show for Sam Carter, plus guest performances from Liam Bailey, Nancy Elizabeth, Aidan Smith and Jojo’s own band Cortina Deluxx performing in Manchester for the first time in over a year.
SAM CARTER
A startlingly perceptive and self-assured young singer and guitarist from the English midlands, Sam Carter has spent the last few years busily honing his craft both as a writer and performer, studying guitar with Martin Simpson and touring with Bellowhead whilst holding down his post as Emerging Artist in Residence at London’s Southbank Centre.
Armed with a ‘killer voice’ (Nitin Sawhney) and the ability to play his guitar ‘like a harp’ (Time Out), as well as an unerring ability to put his personal experiences into a wider perspective, the east London-based songsmith made his mark with his debut album ‘Keepsakes’ released August 2009.
‘One of the most gifted acoustic guitarists of his generation’
Mike Harding, Radio 2
‘…an original, distinctively English singer-songwriter, specialising in well-observed songs – and his debut album lives up to expectations.‘ The Guardian
‘Keepsakes is a surefire collectible‘ The Independent
‘Sam Carter is a sophisticated blender of ancient and modern’ Uncut
