Here is the groove-formation! Explore the role of the percussionist in hip-hop, dance and pop styles. A new course for players of all levels. Fun, friendly and informative!
Use congas with a selection of other percussion instruments and learn their importance and place in today’s chart music. Learn new skills and techniques from two of the UK’s finest players. Create percussive beats and grooves in small group settings and fit them into a full band ‘groove’ with expert coaching from Lea and Chris.
This is an open level course suitable for players of any level from beginner to advanced and highly recommended for all would-be percussionists and drummers. Some experience of hand drumming would be beneficial. Great for those who want to play in bands and collaborate with other musicians on jam nights, performances or in a recording setting.
Bring your own congas. We can provide congas to use in sessions on request. Other percussion provided.
About the Tutors:
Lea Mullen: Percussionist and drummer and who has worked in the music business for the last twenty years. He regularly tours and has recorded with the biggest names (George Michael, Will Young, Ian Brown, Happy Mondays to name a few) and is in demand as a session player and masterclass/clinician all over the world.
Lea’s unique approach to percussion has enabled him to develop unique and exciting ways of using congas and other percussion instruments in a band setting. By paying attention to frequencies, using a bank of knowledge and rhythms from decades of experience and utilizing a variety of percussion instruments and electronic gadgets, Lea has helped to put a percussive mark on the music of many of the worlds chart topping superstars’ live and recorded performances.
Chris Cruiks: Conga player and founder member of the Inner Sence Percussion Orchestra. Chris’ roots are in African, Brazilian and Cuban traditional music and has led workshops and collaborations with musicians from all over the world. He has toured and recorded extensively with musician / producers such as Rae & Christian and AIM. He was also the house percussion player at the Hacienda until 1992. Among others he has recorded two percussion albums with Lea Mullen and friends and is currently recording for Fingathing and Jessica Hoop.
