An evening of wide open space Americana and wistful folk ballads as Band on the Wall and Hey! Manchester present Gabriel Minnikin and Lisa O’Neill – two great singer-songwriters we’ve fallen head over heels for and think you will too.
Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Canada, Gabriel Minnikin is a singer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer. His voice is unbelievable, ranging from the gravely depths of a bass to the richer timbre of a baritone. Although Gabriel’s musical roots are in the pedal steel and banjo sheen of classic Americana, his third record, Parakeets with Parasols, brings a grandiosity and cinematic sweep to his country-folk stylings. Think Tom Waits meets The Wizard of Oz and you’re getting close.
One-time member of the Canadian country rock band The Guthries in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Minnikin settled in Manchester in 2004. That year he released his critically-acclaimed debut record Hard Feelings. Since then he has gained radio support from John Peel and Bob Harris, and is a regular guest on BBC Radio Manchester. He has also toured and share stages with a wealth of artists including I, Calexico, The Handsome Family, The Earlies, Bone-Box and Samson & Delilah. In the summer of 2010 Gabriel and his younger sister Ruth toured as The Minnikins supporting artists including Jools Holland, Jose Gonzalez, Duke and The King, Frazey Ford (The Be Good Tanyas) and First Aid Kit.
