Naarm/Melbourne-based duo Close Counters, comprised of Finn Rees and Allan McConnell, are known for their eclectic fusion of house, neo-soul, broken beat, and disco. Their 2023 album SOULACOASTA II received critical acclaim, winning a Music Victoria Award and earning an Australian Music Prize nomination, with tastemakers such as Gilles Peterson and DJ Mag praising its inventive use of global samples. The duo’s energetic live shows often expand to a seven-piece ensemble, and they have consistently sold out major venues in Melbourne while supporting artists like Madlib, Sofi Tukker, and Confidence Man at top Australian festivals including Splendour in the Grass and Meredith Music Festival.

Close Counters have made a significant international impact, with their single “Rollout” (a collaboration with Young Franco, Scrufizzer, and Jay Prince) featured on the FIFA 23 soundtrack and in an Apple iPhone campaign. Their recent tours have included sold-out shows in London, packed sets across Europe, and appearances at renowned festivals like Lost Village and Defected Malta. The duo is also celebrated for their remixes for artists such as PNAU, Genesis Owusu, and Elder Island, which have received support from influential DJs and radio stations worldwide.

Beyond music, Close Counters invest deeply in their visual and creative identity, with Finn Rees (as PIEWACK) leading their artwork and video production, and their music videos gaining airplay on MTV and RAGE. Their latest concept album, LOVERS DANCE ACADEMY, showcases collaborations with artists like Lyric Jones and Allysha Joy, reflecting the vibrant, community-driven creative scene of Naarm/Melbourne and the band’s commitment to uplifting, dancefloor-ready grooves
