Wall of Sounds presents… a workshop facilitated and inspired by Paco Pena, the world’s foremost Flamenco guitarist, and a whole day of workshops for guitar, dance and percussion with performances and food. Followed by an evening concert by Laboratorio Brujo – with musicians formerly of the internationally-acclaimed Ojos de Brujo!
Beginning with a morning workshop led by Paco Pena and delivered by some of his team of accompanying performance artists – the day will also feature a Flamenco cinema screening in the Picturehouse Bar, authentic paella cookery, tapas and drinks and student performances culminating in the evening performance by Laboratorio Brujo.
Paco Pena Flamenco Group Workshop
Paco Pena directs a 2-hour workshop focussing on developing contemporary flamenco ensemble skills. Pena draws on over 3 decades of experience of composing and producing hugely innovative and inspiring new works, derived not only from the flamenco tradition, but also taking inspiration from other traditions from across the world. When performing to an audience, his company places flamenco up-to-date in contemporary terms, but still embracing the importance of traditional structures as an essential. This will be dealt with during the class, and individual instrumental sessions will be delivered by members of his company, including Rafael Montilla, Diego Alvarez and Inmaculada Rivero – culminating in a session combining the various composites of dance, guitar, vocal and percussion. Paco Pena himself will direct the final ensemble and move between the instrumental groups while giving advice and guidance throughout the morning workshop.
Afternoon activities include a screening of “Flamenco”; a documentary by Carlos Saura that includes performances from some of the world’s greatest flamenco singers, dancers and guitarists. Helped by cinematography by Vittorio Storaro, director Carlos Saura brings with this film the “Light of Flamenco to the World”.
The afternoon also features performances by participants in the four week flamenco course that has lead up to this Fiesta.
This event gives a unique opportunity for you to meet and work with some of the world’s leading exponents of Flamenco while meeting other enthusiasts, musicians, dancers and percussion players from the UK and beyond. All taking place in the intimate, informal and friendly environment of Band on the Wall.
