ESKA performs new music written in collaboration with 15 emerging artists.

To mark the finale of Brighter Sound’s Artistic Directors Series #008, ESKA will lead 15 musicians, performers and visual artists in a live premiere of original music created during the residency at a special, one-off event.

The show on Sunday 28 May will feature new work created in collaboration between ESKA and some of the UK’s most exciting emerging musicians, performers and visual artists.

There are few better ways to discover the best up and coming talent in the UK music industry – the intensive and inspirational residency weeks provide the setting for the creation of the most imaginative and incredible new music under the guidance of inspirational leaders, and all previous Artistic Directors residencies have resulted in highly acclaimed sell-out shows. ESKA’s inclusion of performance and visual artists will add another dimension to the night.

ESKA defies categorisation, blending soul, folk-pop, jazz, electronica and blues. Her twenty-year career has taken her around the world, collaborating with artists including Grace Jones, UNKLE and Tony Allen. In 2015, ESKA released her self-titled debut album to rave reviews, earning a Mercury Prize nomination.
ESKA explained what excited her about this opportunity:

“For us, art is not an end in itself … but it is an opportunity for the true perception and criticism of the times we live in.” – Hugo Ball, founder of DADA, 1916.

“This is art’s ‘call to arms’! The barometer of success of this process will be how we are able to challenge ourselves and our audience to think… Working across various art forms, I hope this will also be an opportunity for collaboration, to get a different perspective on the role and function of our art. If you, like me, are struggling to grasp what’s going on in the world, here is a chance to make a response to that. Excited?  So am I.” – ESKA

This is now a free event

We have decided to make the ESKA show this weekend a free event with the opportunity to donate to the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund in partnership with The Red Cross at the show.

Anyone who has already bought a ticket can apply for a refund via point of purchase and apply instead through the Eventbrite link for free tickets, or simply keep their tickets and we’ll pass on the full cost to the Emergency Fund.

Due to increased security precautions, we won’t be able to offer walk-up tickets on the night, however free tickets can be ordered through the following link. Advanced booking is therefore essential.

Follow this link for tickets: https://eskafree.eventbrite.co.uk

We are moved that ESKA, Adrian, and every one of the participating artists were unhesitant in their desire to continue with this Artistic Residency and the show itself following the appalling tragedy in Manchester this week.

We hope you can join us in a celebration of participation, unity and music.

Best wishes

The Brighter Sound team
