The festive season is in full swing, so join us at Band on the Wall as we (almost) say goodbye to 2018 with Edward II performing live, plus some very special guest DJs. Yes, it’s the first ever Edward II ‘Year’s Up Knees Up’!
With rock-steady rhythms, blazing horns, fabulous harmonies and fiery melodeon melodies, Edward II were a regular feature of world and roots festivals across the world throughout the 90s.
Born out of the Rock Against Racism movement it was originally conceived by a loose punk collective to celebrate the similarities between the England’s diverse communities, particularly English folk and Caribbean roots and reggae. Signed to Cooking Vinyl the band released a number of critically acclaimed albums before splitting up in 1999.
In 2016 the band returned and released the critically acclaimed ‘Manchester’s Improving Daily’ CD (4* Guardian, 4* Mojo Magazine), and have been performing at festivals across the UK including Glastonbury, Cambridge Folk Festival, Shrewsbury Folk Festival, Towersey and Boomtown.
Exploring songs written in Manchester during the industrial revolution (called Broadsides), and now held within Manchester’s Central Library, the project features 16 songs written in and about the city and include such classics as ‘Regarding a New Song on the Great Demonstration which is to be made on Kersal Moor September 28th, 1838’, Mr Sadler Balloon and Victoria Bridge on a Saturday Night.
This is a standing show.
