Dr Jazz and the Cheshire cats + Bury Youth Big Band

  • Thursday | 22.01.26
  • 7.00pm
  • Band on the Wall, Manchester

A swinging night of big band bangers celebrating the launch of the Cats’ album, “Swinging with the Cats”. Expect stylish interpretations of classic hits from Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Ted Heath, Ivy Benson and many more, with vocals evoking Frank and Ella, and few Latin jazz surprises along the way. Bring your dancing shoes!

Dr Jazz and the Cheshire Cats big band was formed in 2002 by musical director Catherine Tackley, Professor of Music at the University of Liverpool. Although the band is based and rehearses in Lymm, Cheshire, players come from across the North West region. Featuring two fantastic vocalists, the band has a wide repertoire, with a particular reputation for authentic performances of swing from the 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond. As a result, the band is in high demand to play for vintage dancing.
In 2022 the band celebrated its twentieth year with a concert in the new Tung Auditorium in Liverpool. Highlights from the past two decades include performances at venues as diverse as the Royal Northern College of Music, Tatton Park, the Troxy in London and Invisible Wind Factory in Liverpool as well as tours to Ireland, Cornwall and London.

Bury Youth Big Band consists of senior players from Bury Music Service who are proficient musicians and keen jazz enthusiasts. They play in a range of styles to appeal to audiences and to stretch their own experiences; Glen Miller, Gordon Goodwin, even Chaka Khan have featured on their set list! They perform regularly at local venues as well as further afield such as at Stoller Hall in Manchester. Their Musical Director Steve Jones is not only an experienced teacher and conductor at Bury Music Service but also a professional trombonist who is passionate about sharing his love of jazz, improvisation and live performance. They are delighted to have been invited to support Dr Jazz and the Cheshire Cats at this fabulous venue.
