An Edition Records special as we showcase two of their most highly regarded outfits – label founder Dave Stapleton’s Quintet and the sublime Marius Neset Quartet.
DAVE STAPLETON QUINTET
Dave Stapleton – piano
Jonny Bruce – trumpet
Ben Waghorn – tenor saxophone
Paula Gardiner – double bass
Elliott Bennett – drums
DSQ has received 4- and 5-star reviews in France, Germany and the UK for their past three albums, and are as compelling and powerful live as they are on record. The music builds on the foundations of modal, Bluenote-period jazz but also brings in classical and filmic qualities, with a muscular, vital frontline team and a subtle, vibrating rhythm section.
“A real UK Jazz revelation” Guardian
MARIUS NESET QUARTET
Marius Neset – soprano & tenor saxophone
Nick Ramm – piano, keyboards
Jasper Høiby – double bass
Anton Eger – drums
Norwegian-born Marius is a huge talent: described as ‘a tenor master of the future’. At only 25 years old he brings an astonishing breadth of references and maturity to his work. Joe Henderson, Michael Brecker and Wayne Shorter have left their impressions on him, but he has forged his own direction and his playing is utterly compelling: breathtaking musical fireworks executed with a flawless technique, combined with a depth of expression and complemented by a powerful band that propels the music along.
‘Performing in a band with Marius is like being on a bobsleigh team; his energy, speed of reflex, and superb technique enable him to keep changing up a gear, way beyond what one imagines humanly possible.’ Django Bates
Artist-led Edition Records was formed in 2007 by the Cardiff-based pianist/composer Dave Stapleton and jazz photographer Tim Dickeson, as a platform for new and established original voices in contemporary music.
This event will begin at 8pm but our Picturehouse Cafe Bar is open from 5.30pm for delicious food and drinks.
