Magazine and Visage keyboard supremo Dave Formula, brings a new take on funk to Band on the Wall with The Finks. Formed by Dave Formula with Angel Brother’s alongside roots session legend Andy Seward on bass, The Finks are the ultimate, authentic Hammond organ funk outfit.
Back in Manchester 1966, dressing sleekly, adoring R&B music a young Dave Tomlinson stormed out of Kendal’s Department Store, never to return to regular employment, shouting back to his now ex-boss, “That’s it! I quit. I’m off to be on Top Of The Pops”. A youthful arrogant boast maybe, but, remarkably, within two weeks he darn well was. Dave, freshly installed in on keyboards with his latest beat group St. Louis Union, was tearing up the hit parade with a workout of The Beatles’ ‘Girl’. It finally stalled at #11, but by that time St. Louis Union became the in-house band at the now fabled ‘Twisted Wheel’ soul club in Manchester, and rivaled The Small Faces as the Mod band. While Dave changed his surname to Formula and went to receive critical acclaim for his work with ground breaking post-punk pioneers Magazine, and later commercial success with New Romantic figureheads Visage.
But the mod aesthetic bites down hard and it bites down deep. Dave has returned to those halcyon regulation 1⁄2” turn-up days, with a new, Hammond organ led, beat combo, The Finks. It’s a classic groove-organ outfit, and with you is the first fruit from that tree. Playing tracks by The Meters, Booker T & The MGs and Jimmy Smith, mixed with a bunch of outstanding original tunes, The Finks are a unique, danceable and exciting pedigree beat combo that pays homage to the great grooves of the past, with a sharp eye on the future of funk.
Stylish, snappy and soulful, The Finks are Europe’s finest groove-organ quartet.
