Band on the Wall bring you a huge British Reggae double-bill:

Dennis Bovell Dub Band with special guest Carroll Thompson

Britain’s reggae maestro Dennis Bovell is producer, composer, re-mixer, bandleader, Lovers Rock pioneer – and the heaviest bassist in town, pumping out the deepest of body-shaking dub grooves.

From the days of his seminal band Matumbi and the radical days of punk, Dennis continues to be a massive presence – he’s worked with the likes of Marvin Gaye, Fela Kuti, The Slits and Linton Kwesi Johnson as well as recently releasing a full length album with the Beta Band’s Steve Mason – and live, the Dub Band’s rock-solid horns and rhythm section never fail to move and groove.

‘[Dennis Bovell’s] contributions to reggae are huge – he was one of the original architects of lover’s rock, a movement that put British reggae on the world map.’ The Independent

Carroll Thompson’s debut album, Hopelessly in Love, stands out as one of the most important reggae albums of its time – a groundbreaking release, which helped define British reggae for a new generation.  Her singles I’m So Sorry and Simply In Love, both topped the reggae chart in 1981. She won two GLR Reggae Awards in 1982, for Best Female Performer and Best Song (for Hopelessly In Love). In 1983, she won further awards, again winning Best Female Performer at the GLR awards.

She continued with regular reggae chart hits, recording with Sugar Minott, Trevor Walters, Aswad and Courtney Pine and worked with Mad Professor on The Other Side Of Love album.

Carroll’s warm vocals and honest songwriting, perfectly capture the magical era of Lovers Rock.

Both Dennis Bovell and Carroll Thompson both featured in BBC 4s acclaimed documentary Reggae Britannia, watch it here:
