A special night of Jazz & Soul with guest soloist and trombone virtuoso Jiggs Whigham and featuring some of the finest trombonists in the U.K. This performance and post conference party is the culmination of the National Trombone Day event held at Chethams School by the British Trombone Society.
As an internationally acclaimed trombone soloist, bandleader and educator, originally from Ohio, Jiggs has played with the biggest names in jazz. He was featured soloist and lead trombonist, at the tender age of 17, with the Glenn Miller Orchestra and later, aged 19, with Stan Kenton. He has since worked and recorded with an A to Z of Jazz royalty from Adderly to Zawinul and directs the BBC Big Band and the Berlin Jazz Orchestra. As an educator he is visiting tutor at many of the the leading conservatoires in the US and Europe. Currently living in Germany Jiggs is president of the International Trombone Association.
The evening kicks off with a set from brand new trombone funk group Soul Tubes. Featuring John Barber, Robbie Harvey, Carol Jarvis, Jon Stokes and Simon Minshall. Coming from diverse musical backgrounds, these trombonists come together to form a trombone group with a difference. Music to be featured includes covers from Earth Wind & Fire, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder.”
Doors open to the main venue at 19.30. The performance will begin at 20.00 but our Picturehouse Cafe Bar is open from 19.00pm.
