Band on the Wall is thrilled to welcome the Grammy-winning American soul singer to Manchester for a very special concert featuring full live band. Expect all the hits from this living legend’s massive, and hugely influential, body of work including Clean Up Woman and Tonight Is The Night.

Born singing gospel with family group Echoes Of Joy, Betty Wright began experimenting with R&B music in 1965 and scored her first national hit Girls Can’t Do What Guys Can Do at the age of 14. It was not until the end of 1971 that the most successful phase of her career took place with song Clean Up Woman becoming a worldwide hit . In 1974 she scored big again with the songs Tonight is the Night and Grammy winning Where is the Love.  In 1988  she became the first woman to have a gold record on her own label with the release of Mother Wit, which featured two of her biggest hits –  No Pain No Gain and  After The Pain.

Wright has been instrumental in the careers of hundreds of artists  over the years including Lil’ Wayne,  Beyonce, Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez, Joss Stone, Mia X, Trick Daddy, Flo Rida, DJ Khaled, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Alice Cooper and Bill Wyman.

In January 2011, Wright released Betty Wright: The Movie – her first album in ten years. Critically- acclaimed, and demonstrating that she’s lost none of her incredible vocal powers (she is famous for her incredible 6 octave range), it included collaborations with Joss Stone, Snoop Dogg, Lil’ Wayne and Lenny Williams and the track Surrender was nominated for a 2011 Grammy in the Best Traditional R&B Perfromance category.

If you love soul then don’t miss this onece-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get up close with one of soul music’s true and authentic legends in the perfect setting of Band on the Wall.

Support comes from Call me Unique – a singer song-writer from Birmingham.  Heavily influenced by jazz, soul and the lost art of jazz scat-singing, she’s been described as merging the sounds of Lily Allen, Jill Scott and Billie Holiday, with clever hints of idols Lisa Lopes, Lauren Hill and Ella Fitzgerald.

Combining these elements and influences with modern rap, beautiful melodies and soulful, thought-provoking lyrics, delivered with a voice of breathtaking beauty over subtle arrangements, her sound truly is “Unique”.
