Now celebrating their 10th anniversary with this European tour, Scandinavia’s Atomic was established in 2000 and quickly developed a dedicated fan base for their explosive blend of American free-jazz with European flavours permeating throughout.
While they make no secret of their admiration for leading American jazz musicians such as Duke Ellington, Archie Shepp, Charles Mingus and George Russell, the music of Atomic is also mixed with an equal love of European free jazz and improvised music. They regard the American and European jazz traditions as an inspiration rather than a restriction, as a springboard to set their own direction and position within jazz music.
Tim Daisy: percussion
Dave Rempis: saxophone
Kent Kessler: bass
Fred Lonberg-Holm: cello
Ken Vandermark: reeds
Ken Vandermark formed his quintet during the spring of 1996. Since then, he has used the ensemble as a vehicle to generate new ideas about composition and improvisation; work that has led the standard album reference, the Penguin Guide To Jazz On Cd, to call the group “a modern-day band for the jazz ages.” The band’s current members have all had years of performance experience with a wide variety of music and musicians. This, coupled with the range of instrumentation and stylistic potential held by the ensemble, allows Vandermark to compose material that runs the gamut of musical possibilities- incorporating elements from jazz history, contemporary composition, funk and rock throughout the band’s forward thinking performances.
This seated concert will begin at 7.30pm. Picturehouse Cafe Bar open for drinks and meals from 5.30pm.
