Manchester Jazz Festival 2017
The African Salsa Orchestra, from Benin and Cuba and led by Michel Pinheiro, is a dancing machine that makes you walk from Cotonou to Cuba! The group takes you on a journey in which Manding rhythms, gospel, rhythm & blues and reggae combine with the stunning sounds of Cuban salsa – a mixture of voodoo cults and Western music. Cubans have added piano and brass while the drum came from the Yorubas of Nigeria.
Singing in French, English, Spanish, Yoruba, Fon, Dioula, all over devilishly danceable rhythms, this debut Manchester show will see the Orchestra tear up the dancefloor with their infectious rhythms and blazing horns!
Before the concert, all ticketholders are invited to a one-off workshop with Michel Pinheiro and members of the African Salsa Orchestra! Learn the rhythms and harmonies of salsa from the one of the best salsa’s ensembles in the world. Workshop is free for all ticketholders and begins at 6pm.
