15 Afrobeat Essentials: From Fela to Femi, Tee Mac to Funky Rob Way

While the work of Fela Kuti is the jewel in the crown of Afrobeat music, there is also a wealth of tremendous material that has been inspired by his message or created by his contemporaries.

FELA FELA FELA, Band on the Wall’s club night on 1st March, sees esteemed DJs Martin Lamb & Sir Robin throwing down classics by the pioneering saxophonist, songwriter and founder of the Afrika Shrine, alongside tracks which trace back to the widely-celebrated late great.

Ahead of the event, we’ve put together a playlist of fifteen Afrobeat essentials, opening the playlist with a blistering cut by Osibisa, sliding through the contemporary work of Dele Sosimi and Karl Hector & The Malcouns and culminating in pivotal recordings by Fela and his son, Femi.

If you like what you hear, you’re guaranteed to get swept up in this Friday’s Afrobeat celebrations!
