The Vulfpeck rhythm guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Cory Wong announces a second London show at Omeara on Saturday 2nd March 2019 as part of The Optimist UK tour, which sees Wong play his biggest UK solo shows to date, taking place February – March 2019. The Optimist follows Wong’s critically-acclaimed debut solo LP, 2017’s Cory Wong and the Green Screen Band which introduced the world to his unique blend of outstanding musicianship and eccentric visuals.
With the prolific American funk collective Vulfpeck and recent spin-off group The Fearless Flyers, Cory Wong has been central to the revival of classic funk and R&B rhythms and styles through viral YouTube videos, modelled after live TV performances from the 1970s and 1980s.
Dubbed “The most famous Minnesota musician you’ve probably never heard of”, by Minnesota Public Radio station The Current, his masterful playing has seen him work on NBC’s The Voice and collaborate with the likes of Ben Rector, Gene Simmons, Questlove, The Blind Boys of Alabama, and Bootsy Collins.
The Optimist UK tour sees Cory Wong play his first shows in Glasgow, Leeds and Bristol, plus his biggest shows in Manchester and London, with his full band.
Support comes from vocalist Phoebe Katis. Graduating from University of Leeds with a BA in Music in 2014, Phoebe moved to London, where she is fast becoming one of the UK’s most sought after vocalists and songwriters. In October 2014, Phoebe penned and performed the theme song to BAFTA and BIFA winning movie ‘Kajaki. The True Story’ (‘Kilo Two Bravo’ – US release). In 2018 Phoebe collaborated with American funk guitarist extraordinaire Cory Wong, co-writing and performing the tune ‘Juke on Jelly’ featured on Wong’s most recent album ‘The Optimist’. She’s currently working with Cory on her debut full length record!
