Mr Scruff’s record box: The new, the eighties and the abstract

Mr Scruff and Kelvin Brown reunite for Keep it Unreal on Saturday 6th May. Having recently been involved in Brighter Sound’s vinyl weekender, the pair have some exclusive tunes to drop on the dancefloor, including a latin-influenced cut from Contours, who released a fine EP on Rhythm Section late last year. Check out a few more picks from Mr Scruff’s record box, below.

Brother Resistance – Dancin Shoes Rapso (Left Ear Records LP)

‘Killer leftfield Trinidad Disco/Lypso/Rapso Jam from 1986. Tough rhythm & great vocals.’

The Right Direction – Midnight Rhythm (Past Due 12″)

‘Solid midtempo disco bubbler with heavy bass and great harmonies.’

Actress – Fantasynth (Ninja Tune LP)

‘Brilliantly simple abstract house jam from his new album. A wooly mechanical beat, subtle clicks, squeaks & a very slightly out of time loop that drifts in out for the whole 5 minutes. Ace.’

The Drones of Joy – In Search of the Knot (Exclusive 10″)

‘This is by a chap from Southampton, who joined us on the Vinyl Weekender course last week, and cut this tune onto 10”. I know that Kelvin Brown has been hammering this tune too, so it will be a race to see who gets to play it first on May 6th!’

Black Rascals featuring Cassio Ware – So In Love (Polar 12″)

Recently reissued, this 1993 classic is one of my favourite Blaze Productions. My original has a big scratch all across the B side, so a fresh copy is very welcome!
