Wall of Sounds: Helping emerging musicians

In partnership with Brighter Sound, we have designed an innovative programme aimed at emerging and mid career musicians, providing them with a unique chance to work, compose and perform with professional artists. Now entering its third year we believe this programme can continue to harness and develop the talents and passions of the incredible artists we work with.

Our Artistic Directors Residency Series comprises of an intense week of music making activity, during which participants work with a signed band or artist to creating new material and stage a live performance at Band on the Wall. The first in the series was with clarinetist and composer Arun Ghosh, followed by Northumbrian folk band The Unthanks, with our most recent programme being led by three core members of New York based jazz outfit Snarky Puppy. Participants are given access to support and opportunities once the residency has finished, including access to professional mentoring and performance opportunities. Our most recent cohort will be returning to Band on the Wall in June to use our state of the art facilities to record tracks they’ve been working on together since meeting on the residency.

The quality of the artists we choose to lead the residencies cannot be understated; all of our residency artists have continued to build on their own already considerable successes. During our week with The Unthanks they were nominated for two BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, while only this week Arun Ghosh has been named Parliamentary Jazz Awards Instrumentalist of the year. Our most recent artists Snarky Puppy have set the bar the highest, since working with us in February of 2013, they have won a Grammy!

The Band on the Wall Foundation has been crucial in securing the funds to deliver another groundbreaking programme of artistic and professional development for the UK’s emerging musicians.
