John Smith + support 3rd December 2013

"The playing style he adopts may cause your jaw to hit the floor…he has all the flair for the gathering storm that made Jeff Buckley so attractive...one hesitates to mention Nick Drake but well, one already has done.” Word Magazine

John Smith is a guitar man from Devon. He is also quietly becoming recognized as one of the most exciting new voices on the British folk scene. He is a dazzling and inventive guitarist with a wondefully unconventional percussive playing style, and possesses an unforgettable honeyed gravel growl of a voice that belies his 30 years. Smith spent several years working on the road - touring with late great folk legend John Martyn and accompanying Davy Graham on his final tour. He has also supported John Renbourn, David Gray, Martin Carthy, Jools Holland, Tunng, and has shared the stage with Cara Dillon, James Yorkston, Martin Simpson and Ben Ottewell. John Smith spent much of 2012 touring with Lisa Hannigan and her band, and doing some supports across Europe, US, UK, Ireland and more recently Japan with Joe Henry. It was on a recent round of UK supports that John and Richard Hawley formed a bond and Hawley extended the invite to John to join him on the Irish dates in December.

Chris Smither 8th November 2013

The acclaimed American singer songwriter bring his music to town for what promises to be a wonderfully intimate night to remember.

A deeply profound and skilled songwriter, Chris Smither draws deeply from the blues, American folk music, modern poets, and philosophers. Reviewers continue to praise his dazzling guitar work, gravelly voice and songwriting. “Smither is an American original – a product of the musical melting pot and one of the absolute best singer-songwriters in the world.” Associated Press.

Like John Hammond and a handful of other musicians whose careers began in the 1960s blues revival, guitarist, singer, and songwriter Chris Smither can take pride in the fact that he's been there since the beginning. Except for a few years when he was away from performing in the '70s, Smither has been a mainstay of the festival, coffeehouse, and club circuits around the U.S., Canada, and Europe since his performing career began in earnest in the coffeehouses in Boston in the spring of 1966. Smither is best known for his great songs, items like "Love You Like a Man" and "I Feel the Same," both of which have been recorded by guitarist Bonnie Raitt. The results of this meeting of musical minds are exciting, new and powerful.

The group’s 2011 debut album was highly acclaimed, with All About Jazz describing the group as ‘jazz at its most exalted’ and The Guardian proclaiming it as ‘world-class jazz, nothing short of sensational’.
Magnus Ostrom 19th September 2013

Magnus Olstrom has confidently stepped out of EST's huge shadow to assert himself as a central figure in the Scandinavian Jazz scene. With his debut album Thread of Life garnering 5 star reviews back in 2011, Band on the Wall is delighted to welcome this immense talent to town.

The tragic death of pianist Esbjorn Svensson in 2008, the result of a diving accident, brought about the untimely demise of E.S.T., one of the world’s most innovative and influential jazz ensembles. For what was nominally a jazz act the Swedish trio, also featuring bassist Dan Berglund and drummer Magnus Ostrom, had achieved an almost unprecedented degree of worldwide commercial success but had done so without any inherent compromise in the quality of their music. It is this musical honesty and commitment to following his on vision that Ostrom continues to bring to his work. Tickets now on sale for this very special night.

French electro-horror pop outfit Zombie Zombie bring their retrograde, John Carpenter-inspired sound to Band on the Wall. Chiller and thriller in equal measure.

Taking as starting point the pioneering electronic music from artist like Suicide, Silver Apples and Raymond Scott spiked with the film scores of John Carpenter and George Romero, Zombie Zombie use original analogue synths, theremin. delay pedals, bongos and space echo to stunning effect. In 2010 their album Zombie Zombie plays John Carpenter received rave reviews and a whole batcage full of new fans. The band has now developed into a trio with new member Doc Schonberg (Antilles / The Berg Sans Nipple) and an ever-expanding sound since their last Sun Ra cover single and the release of Rituals of a New World in 2012. Uneasy listening and hypnotically captivating, it's Tales of the Unexpected for your ears.

Matthew Halsall Sextet + GoGo Penguin 1st August 2013

A Gondwana Records party, celebrating recent releases from two of Manchester’s most vibrant home-grown exports making a heavy impact on the UK jazz scene.

Matthew’s sound echoes the modal jazz of John and Alice Coltrane and the hard bop of the late ’50s and early ’60s, but on Fletcher Moss Park, his latest recording and the focus of tonight’s performance, he offers his most personal statement yet. Inspired by the Didsbury gardens, the stillness and beauty of those surroundings have steeped into his elegant and sincere compositions, which draw on his love of spiritual jazz and contemporary dance music, eschewing complex jazz language for an earthy honesty and direct communication.

GoGo Penguin draws on a heady brew of influences from classical to electronica: from Aphex Twin to Brian Eno, Debussy to Shostakovich and Massive Attack to EST. Their debut recording Fanfares won rave reviews and was nominated for ‘best jazz album’ at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards. The band’s ability to synthesise and develop each others’ melodic and harmonic ideas whilst absorbing influences makes for an enthralling, powerful and energetic live experience.

Music for your brain and booty: Brooklyn's Snarky Puppy bring their dazzling, genre-bending, jazz/funk/dance-fused sounds to Band on the Wall for a night of exhilarating music.

The 3-time Dallas Observer Music Award winning group ("Best Jazz Act" 2008, 2009, 2010) fuses a deep knowledge and respect for musical tradition with sonic and conceptual innovation in a way that is able to reach the most critical, or most carefree- audience.

Recently the band has gone from underground secret to one of the most internationally renowned names in instrumental music featuring a host of musicians built around the consistent core of Grammy Award-winners Robert "Sput" Searight on drums (God's Property, Snoop Dogg) and Shaun Martin on keys (Kirk Franklin, Erykah Badu).
Beer n Blues Weekender ft. Ian Parker (Afternoon Session) 20th July 2013

The perfect afternoon libation of rare and wonderful beers and live blues featuring a solo performance by the thrilling guitarist Ian Parker.

Guitar hero? Consummate showman? Electrifying live performer? Ian Parker is all these things, but let's face it, it's the song that really counts and Parker offers something for everyone: rock, blues, roots, soul, gospel, funk are all to be found in the musical melting pot of a man fast becoming Britain's best-loved blues / roots performer.

A genuinely literate songwriter, the man is rooted in the Blues but not trapped in them. Guitar lovers need not fret, there's plenty to satisfy even the most demanding axe-head; but what lingers are the songs which get in your head and stubbornly refuse to leave, much like many an audience after a Parker gig. Performing here solo, Ian Parker is all that is good about contemporary, guitar driven music.

Shuggie Otis + special guest Jesca Hoop 12th July 2013

This concert has been rescheduled from 9th May. All tickets from this date will be honoured.

With a new band, currently on a 'Never Ending World Wide Tour', as a rare and wonderful treat we present the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist performing a delicious mix of rhythm 'n blues, gospel and blues with elements of jazz, soul and rock 'n roll on 9th May 2013. Plus very special guest appearance by Jesca Hoop.

Son of rhythm & blues pioneer Johnny Otis, Shuggie Otis started playing guitar at a mere 2 years old, and embarked on his performing career at 12 with his father's band. By 15 he was so heavily influenced by blues and jazz he was already writing fantastic cuts, which resulted in his 1969 debut 'Here Comes Shuggie Otis', then his iconic second album 'Freedom Flight' (1971). Including full string sections, Shuggie's funk rhythms and wah-wah guitar on tracks like 'Me & My Woman' take on a definite Hendrix feel, and the album also features his smooth and melodic composition 'Strawberry Letter 23', which the Brothers Johnson re-recorded and made into a globally known and sampled platinum hit.

Having worked with Frank Zappa, Louis Jordan and Mos Def, Shuggie Otis' appeal now seems limitless, his genre-bending writing influencing Lenny Kravitz and Prince, Outkast and Beyonce. His virtuoso guitar playing is so tastefully and soulfully executed, it's visionary and groundbreaking, and Shuggie is a firm favourite with fans of funk, rhythm 'n' blues, stax and chicago soul.

After a 2001 re-release of 'Freedom Flight', Shuggie and Sony Music Entertainment are embarking on a 2013 re-release of his third and influential 1974 album 'Inspiration Information', which gained a huge cult following in the 1990s acid jazz era. The album also features a whole album's worth of previously unreleased material, and some exciting live performances.

This concert will begin at 7.30pm but our Picturehouse Cafe Bar is open from 5.30pm for delicious food and drinks.

Ultramagnetic MCs - Critical Beatdown 25th Anniversary Tour 11th July 2013

The veteran Bronx hip hop outfit Ultramagnetic MCs promise to shake the building down as they visit Band on the Wall on the back of their world tour celebrating 25 years since the release of the seminal Critical Beatdown.

Released in 1988, the height of hip hop's first great breakthrough, Critical Beatdown was unmatched in originality, ferocity and innovation. Breaking new ground in sampling techniques the Ultramagnetic crew took the time honoured screams of James Brown to sinister new territory, tearing up and spitting out gnarled cuts of vicious funk. Armed with the E-MU SP1200 sampler, primary producer Ced Gee brought avant garde experimentation to the street, laying the foundation for sample manglers such as Dilla and Madlib. With Critical Breakdown Kool Keith and Ced Gee cemented their reputation as rap's densest lyricists, spitting elliptical imagery with a deranged flow unsurpassed over twenty years later. Despite the album's crunchy lo-fi aesthetic and lyrical acrobatics tracks such as 'Ego Trippin' and 'Travelling at the Speed of Thought' became genre-shaping singles sampled by the likes of Nas and Gang Starr. This is as blunt and crazy as hip hop could get, spawning legions of imitators and fans from Odd Future to Eminem. Critical Beatdown has become a testament in hip-hop heavily influencing groups such as Public Enemy, Cypress Hill, House of Pain, Nas and The Prodigy, who sampled the song “Give the Drummer Some” for “Smack My Bitch Up”.

Ultramagnetic is back together and ready to give the world what they are missing, a true authentic hip-hop show! Having recently performed at BB Kings co-headlining with Raekwon in New York and hitting the stage with Portishead at the All Tomorrows Parties “I’ll Be Your Mirror” festival, they are ready to hit the road! Ultra rare, ultra special, Ultramagnetic - advance booking strongly recommended for what promises to be an astonishing show by these vital figureheads from hip hop's golden age.

Misty In Roots + DJ Mikey D.O.N 14th June 2013

Band on the Wall continues its famous reggae nights featuring the world's best reggae artists live with a very special appearance by the mighty Misty In Roots. Followed by one of our good vibe reggae parties into the early hours with DJ Mikey D.O.N (Night of the Living Dread)

Ever since they were founded at the height of the 1970's UK Reggae scene, Misty In Roots have been loved for their uncompromising mix of spiritual and militant Roots Reggae. This is a band that will always sing praises to Jah and chant down Babylon.

Misty in Roots began life as a Southall-based British roots reggae band in the early 1970s. Their first album was 1979's Live at the Counter Eurovision, a record full of Biblical Rastafarian songs. This powerful, atmospheric live album is a classic and often considered the best live reggae album ever. It was championed by radio DJ John Peel, helping to bring roots reggae to a white audience. At this early stage, the band was a collective with five lead singers and various musicians, though by the time of the second album the band had slimmed down to just three members. Along with Steel Pulse and Aswad, Misty in Roots are one of the most popular English reggae bands of all time.

After a break from recording in the 1990s, they returned, releasing a new album in 2002 and continuing to play concerts to rapturous audiences across the world. Advance booking strongly recommended.

Ragtag feat Wara & Jali Nyonkoling Kuyateh live plus So Flute DJs, DJ Irfan Rainy & DJ Lubi 8th June 2013

Ragtag returns to Band on the Wall for a fantastic late nighter featuring a stellar line-up of global beat artists and DJs.

Wara, the young revolutionaries of the UK's Latin music scene, will be breaking ground this spring on their 2013 UK Tour, presented by La Linea supported by the Arts Council of England. The tour follows hot on the heels of their new genre-defying album "Leave to Remain", effortlessly combining Cuba's most danceable rhythms and styles – Timba, Salsa, Cha-Cha-Cha, Rumba - with contemporary urban elements such as Reggae, Soul, Hip-Hop and Jazz. The nine piece band of musical virtuosos have been packing dancefloors and starting parties on the global scene for the last two years (last year they played Glastonbury, The Big Chill Festival, Secret Garden Party, Barbican's Blaze Festival, The Roundhouse, Ronnie Scott’s to name a few)

Jali Nyonkoling Kuyateh is a Mandinka traditional storyteller or praise singer, known in West Africa as a griot. Members of the Kuyateh tribe have held this noble role throughout history and the members of the tribe are descended from the very first griot, Nyankumang Duga Kuyateh, in the Mali Empire.

Since settling in Manchester in 2003, Jali has become familiar face in the North West can often be seen performing in city squares and performed at the We Face Forward Festival in the summer of 2012. During this time he supported Afrocubism at the Bridgewater Hall and caught the attention of Toumani Diabate, one the most renowned kora players in the world today. In March this year, Jali was invited by organisers of the Manchester International Festival.to play at the official launch of this year’s event.

Lo Jo 28th May 2013

Winners of the 2013 Songlines Magazine Best Group Award and touring on the back of the success of their acclaimed album Cinema el Mundo, music's great explorers Lo Jo’s have been producing some of the most luscious and intoxicating world-infused songs for three decades.

“Thirty years of travelling with open ears has given Lo’Jo’s sound a unique richness. They play funky dubbed-up chanson, raw yet intricate, with a bewildering variety of influences. It adds up to a brilliant whole that scorns classification.” The Guardian

The band was born on the margins, in and around Angers, the city that slumbers securely in a crook formed by the Maine Scene one. Anjou bred big dreams in Lo’Jo, dreams that have transported these musical adventurers to every point of the compass, and back. Their music box is full of sounds and instruments that are thickly plastered with the labels of their travels; The southern Sahara, where they helped to organise the very first Festival in the Desert in 2001, and subsequently launch the international career of the Touareg poet-guitarists Tinariwen; Tbilisi and the Caucasus, where their Babel Caucase caravan stopped over en route to Chechnya; The Reunion Islands in the southern Indian Ocean, just one of Lo’Jo’s many homes from home; not to mention all the places where the band have simply plugged in, to both the local grid and the local human fiesta, and performed...Agadir, Adelaide, Chicago, New York, Buenos-Aires, Katmandou...the list is long and varied, bewilderingly so. “I come from a region where there is no specific musical culture, no folklore,” Péan says. “So I make fire out of every kind of wood.”

“Lo’Jo have created a unique, instantly recognisable sonic signature by absorbing a myriad of influences rather than letting those influences dominate.” Songlines

“a unique style, mixing the poetry and chanson of soulful singer/keyboard player Denis Paén with the sophisticated, attacking, vocals of two Algerian sisters, Yamina and Nadia Nid El Mourid, along with taut, rhythmic backing and the inspired violin work of Richard Bourreau.” The Guardian

Come enjoy these true troubadours and travellers of all the world's less trodden tracks at Band on the Wall.

In 2012 BBC Radio 3 World Music winner and contemporary voice of Mali, Rokia Traore was one of the highlights of Damon Albarn's acclaimed Africa Express, where she performed alongside the likes of Sir Paul McCartney, John Paul Jones and countless other artists. Now in 2013, following a storming set on Later With Jools... and sets planned at both Glastonbury and WOMAD, she embarks on a major international tour of new album Beautiful Africa. While still holding true to her African roots, Rokia rocks out on her new songs so expect this to be a truly thrilling night.

Her first album Mouneïssa (Label Bleu), released in late 1997 in Mali and September 1, 1998 in Europe, was acclaimed for its fresh treatment and unqualifiable combinations of several Malian music traditions such as her use of the ngoni and the balafon. It sold over 40,000 copies in Europe. She won the BBC Radio 3 World Music Award in 2003 and Songlines Best Artist Award in 2009.

Hey! Manchester presents... Junip feat. Elias Araya, Jose Gonzalez, Tobias Winterkorn 12th May 2013

Hey! Manchester present the first Manchester show in two years for Jose Gonzalez’s band Junip, featuring Elias Araya and Tobias Winterkorn.

‘In our case, it’s never simple.’ José González is describing the entire process – writing, recording, life – that went into the creation of Junip, the upcoming, self-titled album from the band he fronts alongside drummer Elias Araya and keyboardist Tobias Winterkorn, due for release on 22 April 2013 on City Slang. ‘All the ups and downs were very “Junip”,’ he adds, ‘so titling it with our name seemed appropriately iconic. It’s truly a band album.’

The distinction is important in Junip’s case, whose evolution has been a long, strange trip, indeed. The group formed in 1998 in Gothenburg, Sweden, but Junip didn’t actually release its acclaimed first album, Fields, until 2010. That delay stemmed largely from the success of González as a solo artist. The renowned singer-songwriter found international acceptance with his individual albums, 2003’s Veneer and 2007’s In Our Nature, which went on to sell over a million albums worldwide; audiences were captivated by the stark combination of González’s uniquely haunting voice and sinuous acoustic guitar on hits like Crosses and Down The Line, and distinctive interpretations of covers like The Knife’s Heartbeats. They were startled and beguiled, then, by hearing González in Junip’s band context, and one with such a propulsive, experimental bent: sprawling away from the stark folk aesthetic of González’s solo efforts, Fields teemed with driving motorik rhythms, psychedelic atmosphere, and dense synth textures.

Junip avoided the protracted evolution of Fields, however, and as a result resounds with immediacy. ‘With Junip, and this album in particular, it’s not the kind of stuff that ends up on my solo recordings,’ González notes. After touring extensively in the wake of Fields, Araya, González, Winterkorn found themselves gelling as a unit like never before, able to access uncharted new sounds and emotions with newfound fluidity. ‘We’d press “record” when we started jamming, and end up with a pretty complete song structure when we finished,’ González explains.

Just as with the first album, Junip was recorded in the trio’s rehearsal space over the course of a year, self-produced by the band with help from Don Alsterberg (sound guru to artists like Soundtrack of Our Lives, International Noise Conspiracy, and Graveyard). Just as Fields pushed boundaries and expectations, Junip expands the stylistic palette yet again with unexpected juxtapositions. ‘We’re somewhere between a German jazz band and an African pop band,’ González cracks.

Support comes from Barbarossa, aka James Mathé, sometime associate of The Fence Collective, Jose Gonzales and Johnny Flynn. Barbarossa trades in soul inflected electronics, with a kitbag full of huge, emotive songs that aim straight at the heart, big things are expected in 2013.

This concert will begin at 8pm but our Picturehouse Cafe Bar is open earlier for delicious food and drinks.

The Tapestry + The Delaplains + The Watchmakers 10th May 2013

Friday 10th May 2013

We're proud to have three of Manchester's best performing tonight, The Tapestry, The Delaplains and The Watchmakers, bringing retro rock sounds to our stage.

Having toured the full-length of UK alone and with The Courteeners, as well as holding guest performances with The Young Knives, Sound Of Guns and Little Barrie, boy/girl combo The Tapestry are a blast of glam rock and indie. Lucid drumming combined with epic guitar riffs and perfectly tuned vocal harmonies turn into their own brand of garage-pop.

"If there was ever a band to fall instantly in love with, it is The Tapestry! " John Robb.

"Post-Clash guitar chops and anthems to kill for" Jon Ashley (Manchester Music)

The Delaplains are already showing themselves to be one of the brightest bands in the country. Formed in May 2012 and Inspired by a combined love of 60's pop and post-punk shoe gaze guitar, the bands output is a unique guitar pop sound.

'Guitar pop perfection' - John Robb

'Honest, passionate and real' - Badly Drawn Boy

With only a handful of live appearences including Exit Calm support and the band's own sold out psychedelic happening at The Kings Arms, Salford. The Watchmakers are creating quite a stir. Their only official music released, a one track practice room home demo 'Before Questions Came', has gained more reviews and column inches than more established acts and led to seasoned music lovers and music industry insiders clamouring for more material.

This event will begin at 8pm but our Picturehouse Cafe Bar is open from 5.30pm for delicious food and drinks.

Now we are delighted to welcome him back for this very special acoustic performance - perfectly suited to the intimacy of the venue. Advance booking strongly recommended.
