Band on the Wall and CODA present a very special concert at Leeds Town Hall by one of the most loved electric folk bands reunited with long time collaborator, friend and folk legend June Tabor.

Twenty-one years ago June Tabor and Oysterband made a landmark album of dark folk together called Freedom and Rain - a union Rolling Stone calleda marriage made in heaven.

"If you can't appreciate June Tabor, you should just stop listening to music", said Elvis Costello. June plus Oysterband's potent energy and top-flight musicianship made for something out of the ordinary, and they toured the UK and America with great success. Following this friendships continued while careers diverged.

However , a reunion to play a short set at fRoots Magazine's 30th birthday party at the Roundhouse in 2010 sparked the chemistry again. Soon they were back in the studio, and with a new albumful of gorgeous tunes and brooding intensity called Ragged Kingdom, plus revisited and refreshed songs from 1991, June Tabor and Oysterband launch one of the most anticipated collaborations of recent years. And so it proved - at this year's BBC Folk Awards Oysterband swept the board receiving 4 awards including Best Group, Best Album and Folk Singer of the Year. Advance booking strongly recommended for what promises to be one of the most magical concerts of the year.

<![CDATA[Dreadzone 7th December 2012]]> Electro-dub pioneers Dreadzone formed in 1993 when ex-Big Audio Dynamite drummer Greg 'Dread' Roberts teamed up with Tim Bran and bassist Leo Williams and keyboardist Dan Donovan, also formerly of Big Audio Dynamite, completing the group’s first line-up. A festival favourite, Dreadzone opened the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury in 1994 and began to bring their unique blend of electro, dub and reggae to a wider audience, going on to chart seven Top 60 singles (including their Top 20 hit Little Britain) and are still going strong after 17 years. The core members Greg Dread and original bassmaster Leo Williams plus the unmistakable MC Spee, legendary reggae vocalist Earl 16 and Chris Compton on guitar make up the current Dreadzone line up.

"Britain should pride itself on producing great cross-cultural institutions such as Dreadzone" Daily Mirror

Dreadzone deal in accessible yet credible club sounds with pop nous, referencing everyone from Woody Guthrie and Max Romeo to John Holt and classic films. They also like to wander into uncharted territory, melding Celtic, Jamaican and Asian influences to their riddims and samples, turning out unique, quirky gems like Captain Dread and Little Britain. Dreadzone have released six artist albums including the seminal Second Light (named by John Peel as one of his favourite albums of all time). Their dubwise beats and bottom end, often adorned with the unmistakably dulcet tones of Earl 16 are a product of the cut-and-paste magpie nature of the ever-morphing world of dance music.

"A feast of bass heavy dubwise danceability” Clash

Hit records, critical acclaim and a huge, devoted fan base are theirs, due in part to their utterly storming live shows - we guarantee this night is going to blow you away big time so get tickets while you still can.

This concert will begin at 9pm but our Picturehouse Cafe Bar is open earlier for drinks and good times.

<![CDATA[Royal Southern Brotherhood feat Cyrill Neville, Devon Allman & Mike Zito 11th November 2012]]>

Band on the Wall is delighted to present the Southern Rock supergroup featuring Mike Zito, Devon Allman, Cyril Neville – Amplified southern soul for a new generation.

Before they even hit a chord, The Royal Southern Brotherhood have your attention. In the US South, where music is religion, two rock ‘n’ roll bloodlines tower above all others. In the saloon bars from Mississippi to Maryland, mere mention of the Allman and Neville Brothers casts a magic spell. Conversation falls silent. Pool balls stop rolling. Ten-gallon hats are tipped in respect and beer-bottles raised in salute. These aren’t just bands, they’re gods, and with a lineup comprising both the iconic Cyril Neville and Devon Allman, The Royal Southern Brotherhood come pre-loaded with expectations.

You’ll already know Cyril Neville: poet, philosopher, percussion master and perhaps the South’s last great soul singer. Devon Allman. As the son of Gregg Allman, the 39-year-old has rock ‘n’ roll in his DNA, but he’s always walked his own path. Mike Zito: the blues ace whose ear for melody provides the counterpoint to his wingman’s rocking tendencies. Nominated in 2011 for the Blues Music Foundation’s ‘Best Blues Rock’ award, and winner of 2010′s Blues Music Award. Bassist Charlie Wooten and drummer Yonrico Scott: both heavyweight names in their own right, with Charlie’s bass chops celebrated on the Southern jam scene for his sets with the Woods Brothers, and Yonrico hitting the skins for luminaries including the Derek Trucks Band, Gregg Allman and the Allman Brothers themselves.

They said that rock ‘n’ roll was dead, but they were wrong. Right now, in 2012, there’s something in the air, as The Royal Southern Brotherhood drag their thrilling new brand of blues-rock and white-hot musicianship from the Southern States to the Manchester stage. The South is rising again - Come along for the ride.

Tigran Hamasyan has been raising eyebrows and dropping jaws worldwide since winning the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition in 2006. Astonishingly virtuosic and sensitive, his playing infuses traditional Armenian melodies with a dazzling jazz sensibility and refined melodies. This unusual marriage of musics has picked up high-profile fans including Chick Corea, Brad Mehldau and Herbie Hancock; his most recent album, A Fable, topped the jazz charts in France.

<![CDATA[Badi Assad 28th October 2012]]>

Badi Assad transcends traditional styles of her native Brazilian music with an exotic mixture of ethnic sounds from around the world. As a result, the extraordinary singer, guitarist, and percussionist has forged her very own exhilarating sound that quite literally defies categorization. Utterly compelling live we cannot recommend this huge talent enough.

A heartfelt vocalist who sings in English and Portuguese and is known for her Bobby McFerrin-like improvisations, Assad is also one of the country's truly accomplished guitar players. In 1995, Assad was voted Best Acoustic Fingerstyle Guitarist by editors of Guitar Player, while readers of the magazine named her album Rhythms the Best Classical Album of the Year. Although her earlier albums focused on unique interpretations of songs by songwriters such as Egberto Gizmonte, Milton Nascimento, Ralph Towner, and George Harrison, Assad displayed her genuinely original songwriting talents on her internationally accalimed 1998 album Chameleon.

The younger sister of famed guitarists Sergio and Odair of the duo Assad, Badi, who grew up in Rio de Janeiro, her first worldwide release, Solo, was recorded in April 1993 at St. Stephens of Hungary Church in New York. Assad followed her debut with three critically acclaimed releases including Rhythms in 1995, the instrumental Echoes of Brazil in 1997, and Chameleon in 1998.

An astonishingly gifted player and songwriter, this should be a truly memorable night in the company of one of our very favourite Brazilian artists.

<![CDATA[Section 25 + X.O.Dus 25th October 2012]]> A Factory Records double bill featuring two of the iconic label's original signings and rarer sonic delights. Between them, X.O.Dus and Section 25 exemplify the visionary choice of bands that made Factory's roster such a creative cauldron in the now near-mythical Manchester music story. Advanced booking strongly recommended.

X.O.Dus

Best known for their 1980 Factory Records Dennis Bovell produced single English Black Boys, X.O.Dus are a Manchester roots reggae band founded by members from Hulme and Moss Side. Formed in mid 1975 by brothers Honey and Leddy Ricketts, along with Trevor Bell, and Dave Reid, they were joined in 1978 by Ricky Jones, Johnny Caton and Gayle Reid. They aimed to give a new, young British sound to reggae, playing a more political / progressive style of reggae, free from the religious dogma typical of other reggae bands at the time. Talent spotted by Joy Division's manager Rob Gretton, the group were invited to record for the then fledgling factory records. They were to remain the only reggae band signed by the label. Now back together this is an incredible opportunity to see this innovative reggae band live.

Section 25

'Powerful, mesmerising and expressive. Perhaps the most maverick and enigmatic of the bands that were part of the now legendary Factory Records roster. Section 25 were formed in Poulton-le Fylde, Lancashire in 1977 by brothers Larry and Vin Cassidy. Their classic Northern Sound defines punk and electro in one. Having worked with Ian Curtis, Martin Hannet and Bernard Sumner on four Factory Albums they now continue to record for LTM. They pre-dated ambient, chillout and massive beats by a decade. Their explorations of hypnotic basslines, thrusting motorik drums and rusty colliding slabs of melody and feedback produce a truly unique and zen like sound.' Kevin Hewick

“Those clever bastards from Blackpool” Anthony H Wilson

“To our teenage minds full of chemicals and hope they had a mystical raw power. Punk aggression mixed with something more disturbing. No wonder Ian Curtis loved them” John Robb

<![CDATA[The Selecter 13th October 2012]]> Monthly ska night Shake n Bake kicks off the season in style with two tone legends The Selecter performing all their hits plus new cuts live plus the Shake n Bake DJs playing the best ska, rocksteady and reggae into the early hours.

The Selecter

Formed in 1979 and once described as “conspiring to make dancing the only way to walk", The Selecter led the ska revival movement, along with 2-tone labelmates, The Specials and Madness. Mixing punk, ska & reggae, their debut album Too Much Pressure successfully reflected the social and political issues of the early Thatcher years in Britain and gave a voice to disaffected youth across the racial divide.

"Hands down, Pauline Black possessed the best voice that ever graced a 2-Tone release. Blessed with a bewitching soprano and dramatic panache, Black's voice reached plateaus that made every other musical detail sound like part of a backdrop painted just to set the stage for her entrance" Rolling Stone Magazine

2011 saw the return of this most vital and visceral ska act, reuniting the original singing duo, the female icon of the 2-tone era Pauline Black and the stylishly charismatic Gaps 'De Killa' Hendrickson, who assuredly deliver stunning performances of classic hits like On My Radio, Three Minute Hero, Missing Words and Too Much Pressure alongside new cuts from their new album, for both old and new ska fans. Jaw-droppingly brilliant live, and followed by the Shake n Bake DJs playing out classic and rare rudeboy tunes, this is going to be a killer of a night so whatever you do get your tickets early and see you for some rudeboy dance action at the front!

<![CDATA[Gordon Giltrap & Oliver Wakeman 2nd October 2012]]>

Guitar Legend and the next generation of keyboard wizardry join forces as Gordon Giltrap and keyboardist Oliver Wakeman (fresh from 4 years of touring with the classic progressive rock band Yes) perform together for the first UK leg of their On The Road With Raven's tour.

One of the most innovative acoustic guitarists in the UK today, Gordon Giltrap has developed his own unique style, much copied, but never bettered. It is impossible not to be awestruck as he coaxes incredible melodies from his instruments; you almost suspect a second pair of hands. He is well known for his varied musical output and Heartsong (a hit single from the album Perilous Journey in 1977) is instantly recognisable as the theme for the BBC TV's long running Holiday programme.

Following ten solo albums in a variety of styles, Oliver Wakeman joined the legendary band 'YES' in 2008, touring with them up until 2011. A live CD and triple vinyl release, In The Present - Live from Lyon, was a fitting bookend to his period in the band. He has also worked with the folk rock band The Strawbs. He appeared on their last studio album as well as their 40th Anniversary CD release. Appearing in venues across North and South America, Europe and the UK with YES, Strawbs and as a solo artist, he has become a well respected live performing musician to add to his other talents as composer, songwriter, lyricist, arranger and producer.

These shows will be the first public performances of a selection of pieces from the forthcoming album as well as new arrangements of classic material from both of their retrospective careers. With their collective histories and talents to draw inspiration from, be prepared for an evening of beautiful compositions, wit and charm from these two virtuosos.

This event will begin at 8pm but our Picturehouse Cafe Bar is open from 5.30pm for delicious food and drinks.

<![CDATA[Pierre Bensusan 25th September 2012]]>

A thrilling night of breathtaking brilliance in the company of one of the world's great acoustic steel string guitarists.

"Some people had waited 25 years to see Pierre Bensusan...by the end of the night the audience was in awe and speechless after hearing one of the greatest acoustic guitar performances ever" Acoustic Guitarists

A Sephardic Jew of Algerian, Spanish and Moroccan descent, the internationally-acclaimed artist Pierre Bensusan plays out his rich heritage and much more on his guitar's steel strings. Almost impossible to pin down stylistically, he cites many influences as diverse as Ry Cooder, Martin Carthy, Big Bill Broonzy, Paco de Lucia, Jimi Hendrix and Bert Jansch to name a few. But Bensusan is very much his own originator, whose playing exhibits remarkable dynamics and tone control, usually to be found only in the playing of high-profile classical guitarists. This, combined with his unique style of scat-singing and incredible rhythm has led to his live concerts becoming the stuff of musical myth-making. Come down to The Band for an intimate night in the company of one of modern acoustic guitar's true greats. Advance booking strongly recommended.

<![CDATA[The Necks 14th September 2012]]>

The Necks are one of the great cult bands of Australia.

"...Entirely new and entirely now...They produce a post-jazz, post-rock, post-everything sonic experience that has few parallels or rivals. They may teach us to listen in a new way, but they communicate a fierce energy and warmth at the same time. Their music is a thrilling, emotional journey into the unknown. Like seeing a world in a grain of sand, The Necks permit us to hear a whole new world of music in a sliver of sound" THE GUARDIAN

Chris Abrahams (piano), Tony Buck (drums), and Lloyd Swanton (bass) conjure a chemistry together that defies description in orthodox terms.

"One of the greatest bands in the world" NEW YORK TIMES

Featuring lengthy pieces which slowly unravel in the most mesmerising fashion, frequently underpinned by an insistent deep groove, the fifteen albums by The Necks stand up to re-listening time and time again.

The deceptive simplicity of their music throws forth new charms on each hearing. Not entirely avant-garde, nor minimalist, nor ambient, nor jazz, the music of The Necks is possibly unique in the world today.

"Absolutely riveting...how three musicians can sound like eighteen is a mystery... extraordinary magical sounds emerged from the ensemble...the way The Necks do this with acoustic instruments is nothing short of miraculous" FINANCIAL TIMES

"At around the 100-year point in jazz's evolution, conjuring new spirits out of old spells is a difficult mojo to work. But people are doing it - a case in point is The Necks" JAZZ TIMES

"It is a fairly safe bet to say that no other group in the world sounds quite like The Necks...extraordinary empathy and discipline" THE TIMES

<![CDATA[Dave & Ansell Collins 31st August 2012]]> A major coup for Band on the Wall as we present the first ever Manchester concert by the legendary Jamaican reggae duo and their band.

Dave Barker and Ansell Collins were working for producer Lee "Scratch" Perry in Kingston in the late 1960s before joining forces in 1971 to produce the massive reggae single Double Barrel. Released by Techniques Records, part of the Trojan Records label, it topped the Jamaican and UK charts in March of that year and remains a firm dancefloor favourite among reggae fans across the world.

The follow-up release, the similarly styled Monkey Spanner, enjoyed the same international success. After cutting an album, Collins and Barker parted company to pursue individual careers with Collins becoming a much in demand session player and Barker became resident in the United Kingdom where he sang with several soul groups before the pair reunited again. While they've played the odd gig in London, this will be the first chance reggae fans will get to see this much-loved pair performing all their hits with full band in Manchester. Tickets on sale now.

This show starts at 8.30pm but our Picturehouse cafe bar will be open earlier for home made food, drinks and good vibes.

<![CDATA[Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra + DJ Irfan 25th August 2012]]> Dele Sosimi was musical director of the critically acclaimed Fela! at London’s National Theatre, and Band on the Wall is thrilled to announce that he'll be performing on our stage with his very own Afrobeat Orchestra as part of We Face Forward.

"Sosimi creates some of the most bewitching grooves in modern African music"
E Jazz News

"Elevates Afro-jazz unto a new realm" Xtrax Magazine

From his early discovery as a 16-year old keyboardist by world-famous Fela Kuti, who brought him into his band Egypt 80, Dele rose to prominence as musical director of the 30 piece band during the 80’s and 90’s.

Whilst at the helm he hatched a plan for a new more aggressive sound, featuring shorter songs and tighter arrangements with Fela’s son Femi Kuti. The result was the band Positive Force, with whom he toured globally for a decade, honing his craft and exploring all the richness of this amazing music.

"The most fluent Afrobeat you're going to hear today" Straight No Chaser

"The glorious interplay of scorching horns, pulsing electric piano and endlessly shifting rhythm section had the audience packed" Daily Telegraph

Following the live performance, Irfan Rainy will be on the decks for a special DJ set 'til late.

This performance is part of We Face Forward, a season of contemporary art and music from West Africa, celebrated across Manchester. We Face Forward is part of the London 2012 Festival.

This event will begin at 9pm but our Picturehouse Cafe Bar is open for delicious food and drinks from 7pm. Special Offer! Book your meal in advance and get free 'lucky dip' tickets for a future concert - click here now for details

<![CDATA[Trembling Bells 16th August 2012]]>

Trembling Bells are Alex Neilson's song-based group who seek to 'reanimate the psychic landscapes of Great Britain and relocate them to some vague, mythic land where basic human crises are encountered and conquered'.

Watch them live and you soon realise these intriguing ambitions are realised brilliantly as Trembling Bells synthesise earlie musik modes and traditional folk with improvised playing, pure psychedelic noise, pop and wonderful soaring vocals to create a true departure into virgin territory. Strangely strange but oddly normal - catch this wonderfully eccentric band who cut a clearing amongst the trees of Albion's more enchanted forests and invite you to come in and listen. Fresh from a highly successful collaboration and tour with Bonnie Prince Billy earlier this year, we welcome these wonderfully eccentric and interesting folk mavericks to Band on the Wall.

Support tonight comes in the form of the cosmic country and raw and unflinching folk of Dan Heywood's New Hawks.

This event will begin at 8pm but our Picturehouse Cafe Bar is open from 5.30pm for delicious food and drinks.

<![CDATA[Diabel Cissokho + Carlou D 3rd August 2012]]> Band on the Wall continues it's series of We Face Forward concerts, featuring the cream of West African artists, with this very special live Senegalese double bill. Featuring Diabel Cissokho, who mixes traditional rhythms with upbeat African dance, plus Carlou D and his 7 piece band - the outspoken voice from Senegal's hip hop generation. DJ for night is Hot Pepper spinning out the best African tunes before and after the live sets.

‘a flavoursome mix of slide guitar, mellow kora and undulating Mandinka rhythms’ fRoots

Diabel Cissokho
Part of the great line of Cissokho griots, Senegalese kora maestro Diabel Cissokho's virtuosity and versatility on the harp-like kora is astounding. Collaborating with everyone from Kandia Kouyate and Pee Wee Ellis to bluesman Ramon Goose - and even a long stint as Baaba Maal's kora player - Diabel's ‘resonant voice and rocking kora style’ (Songlines) have been welcomed everywhere from WOMAD and Glastonbury to London's Barbican. With his own four-piece band, Diabel draws on his rich musical heritage, blending bluesy West African melodies with an upbeat groove, guaranteeing to bring audiences to their feet! Expect this to be one of the musical highlights of We Face Forward's programme of internationally-acclaimed artists from West Africa.

Carlou D
An outspoken voice from Senegal’s hip-hop generation, Carlou D and his 7-piece band bring spiritual roots music, clean living and electric performances straight from Dakar’s ripe music scene. Carlou (like World Circuit stablemate Cheikh Lo) belongs to one of Senegal’s spiritual sects, the Baay Fall, and takes much of his musical inspiration from his spiritual guide, Cheikh Ibra Fall. Taking the essence of the Baay Fall philosophy, the outspoken qualities of hip-hop, and musical elements of jazz, soul, rap, and acoustic roots, Carlou D is an illuminating presence on stage - definitely make him one of Senegal’s next great musical exports.

The most adventurous of all the New Orleans brass bands...The Soul Rebels are the missing link between Louis Armstrong and Public Enemy.” Village Voice

“Utterly uninhibited hip-hop hybrid, not to be missed” Rolling Stone Magazine

Following their jaw-dropping concert at Band on the Wall last year, Soul Rebels Brass Band have gone from strength to strength. They now receive massive attention wherever they paly their intoxicating mix of traditional New Orleans jazz brass flecked and rippled with hip hop and funks flavours.

If jazz music is the heart of New Orleans, then the Soul Rebels’ music is the blood that pumps through the city’s body. The Soul Rebel Brass Band embraces the rich jazz traditions of their homeland but add life-affirming vocals and hip shaking grooves aplenty. Couple those elements to funk, ska, hip-hop, with harmony vocals and more catchy horn lines and solos than you can shake a stick at and you have a goodtime party band like no other, with an infectious energy that’s impossible to resist. DJ support on the night from Mike Chadwick (Jazz Fm's Big Easy).

<![CDATA[Junior Murvin performing the album Police and Thieves 20th July 2012]]> The roots reggae legend performing his classic album in all its glorious entirety with full backing band. Followed by reggae party until 3am.

Best known for his all-time classic "Police and Thieves," Junior Murvin is gifted with a unique, feather-light falsetto that inspired some of Lee "Scratch" Perry's most unearthly productions. Such is the stature of "Police and Thieves" that Murvin remains one of reggae's most loved and played artists of all time.

Murvin's big break came when he successfully auditioned for Lee Scratch Perry at his legendary Black Ark studio with the self-penned rude-boy anthem "Police and Thieves." Recorded and released just weeks later, "Police and Thieves" became the chart-topping reggae hit of the summer in Jamaica and England, both of which were in the throes of intense racial unrest that year. Murvin and Perry co-wrote some more material and completed the Police & Thieves album, which was released by Island in 1977. Generally regarded as one of Perry's finest productions, Police and Thieves featured further singles in "Tedious," "Roots Train," and "False Teachin'."

This is going to be a classic night and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear its author perform the album in its entirety with full band. Followed by one of Band on the Wall's famous good-vibe reggae parties until 3am. Tickets on sale now.

<![CDATA[Sons of Kemet + Anton Hunter Trio 19th July 2012]]> A double delight of a concert as Manchester Jazz Festival present the earthy, vital music of Sons of Kemet with a special guest slot from Anton Hunter Trio.

Sons of Kemet

Shabaka Hutchings – clarinet, tenor saxophone
Oren Marshall – tuba, electronics
Seb Rochford, Tom Skinner – drums

Sons of Kemet is the brainchild of young reeds player and Radio 3 New Generation Artist Shabaka Hutchings, whose ambition for this ensemble was to assemble the most unlikeliest of line-ups and allow them free rein for their distinct musical personalities to shine through. The resultant music is loud, earthy, vital, and refreshingly rough-edged at times but surprisingly danceable; the two drummers spur off each others’ energies and the tuba occupies a variety of roles from breathless walking bass to subtle, overdubbed layers of sound. Shabaka’s plaintive tone and uncluttered compositions frame the sound.

Anton Hunter Trio

Anton Hunter – guitar
James Adolpho – double bass
Johnny Hunter – drums

Opening the evening is a short set from the Manchester guitarist, debuting brand new material at the borders of composition and improvisation: this marks a new phase for Anton and is the first time he leads his own trio. More introspective and spacious than his work with HAQ or the Beats & Pieces Big Band, there is, as ever, still plenty of room for freedom and exploration within the structures, whilst not letting go of strong melodies.

<![CDATA[Zoe Rahman Quartet 18th July 2012]]>

The Mercury-nominated jazz pianist/composer plays music from her current Kindred Spirits recording – the music is a powerful and fresh portrait of her combined English, Irish and Bengali heritage and reflects the diversity of her musical interests and influences. The players in her band share her vision for the music and are all talented soloists in their own right.

They recorded the album after touring Ireland in 2011, a year that co-incided with the 150th birth anniversary of Bengali writer, musician, artist and Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. These two events count, in part, for her choice of music, although the performance will mostly consist of a collection of her recent compositions and other favourite pieces.

Described in The Observer as “a remarkable pianist by any standard”, Zoe Rahman has firmly established herself as one of the brightest stars on the contemporary jazz scene. A vibrant and highly individual pianist/composer, her style is deeply rooted in jazz yet it reflects her classical background, British/Bengali heritage and her very broad musical taste. Known for her powerful technique, wide-ranging imagination and exuberant performance, she has become a highly sought-after musician.

<![CDATA[Betty Wright live at The Ritz, Manchester 10th July 2012]]>

Betty Wright is a soul and R&B singer with deep gospel roots. She influenced a generation of female singer-songwriters and continues to influence the world of hip hop, who sample some of her more famous material.

Born singing gospel with the family group, the Echoes of Joy, Wright began experimenting with R&B music in 1965 when she was only 11. In 1968, she released her first album age 14, and scored her first national hit age 14. Wright's most successful phase of her career began when the song, Clean Up Woman, became a Top 5 pop and #2 R&B hit, and would later influence a remix of Mary J. Blige's "Real Love" single with the sample of its guitar riffs; R&B girl group trio SWV's I'm So Into You also featured a sample from Clean Up Woman.

After co-producing the first two Joss Stone albums, (2003, 2004) multiple GRAMMY nominations, Vocal production on Diddy and Keyshia Cole’s Last Night (#1),a Vocal Coaching spot on Making the Band 3, which spawned the group Danity Kane, Wright managed to squeeze in an amazing collab with her dear friend Ms Angie Stone which garnered them a GRAMMY nomination in Best duets category. Ms. B is also vocal coach to Lil Wayne. This Mother of 5 still manages to mentor several young singer/songwriters in a home-based camp called The MOST, which is an acronym for Mountain Of Songs Today, Wright has been instrumental in the careers of hundreds of artists (vocal coaching, production, song writing, backing vocalist and co-ordinator, music consultancy, etc) The likes of Beyonce, Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez, Joss Stone, Mia X, Trick Daddy, Flo Rida, DJ Khaled, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Alice Cooper and Bill Wyman.

The Movie is the first solo release for the since 2001 for Betty Wright, Despite the span between albums, Wright has been very much in the game over the past decade, working with younger artists like Joss Stone, Kelly Clarkson, Angie Stone, and others. Backed by the rock-solid Roots, the songs (all co=written by Wright) successfully blend vintage and modern soul from the funky jams of “Old Songs” and “Look Around (Be a Man)” to the simmering, sultry cuts “Surrender,” “Tonight Again,” and “One.” The two tracks featuring Snoop Dogg and Lil Wayne, with whom she’s previously worked, split the difference with subtle hip-hop touches, and the duets with Joss Stone (“Whisper in the Wind”) and Lenny Williams (“Baby Come Back”) truly shine. Throughout the album, Wright’s voice sounds incredible. It remains versatile and expressive, and she can still hit all the notes with confidence and style. It can be tough for a seasoned performer to appeal to old and new fans alike, but Wright, with help from The Roots, pulls it off.

Presented by Mean Fiddler & Jazz Café in association with Band on the Wall.

<![CDATA[Ginger Baker's Jazz Confusion 3rd July 2012]]>

Legendary rock drummer, Ginger Baker, renowned for his work with Cream and Blind Faith, is returning to the UK for a jazz fusion tour. Teaming up with saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis, bassist Alec Dankworth, and percussionist Abass Dodoo, the quartet will be performing as ‘Jazz Confusion’. The band's been selling out wherever they pay and been getting dazzling reciews (just check out Evening Standard below). Enjoy progressive jazz originals in a Thelonious Monk style from one of modern music's great icons.

"By rights, a lifetime of booze, drugs, fights, car crashes and wild women should have left Ginger Baker a wreck, but apparently not so...he can still beat out jazz and afro-rhythms with a semblance of the old power. Mixing jazz by Monk, Rollins and Wayne Shorter with blues for an old friend [Cyril Davies] and tribal themes from Algeria and Nigeria, he did a decent night’s work. Not bad for the man once voted Least Likely to Survive the Sixties." London Evening Standard

Ginger Baker’s recognition as a drummer began during the Graham Bond Organisation in the early sixties. The band toured with The Who, The Troggs, The Moody Blues and Chuck Berry, attracting press interest for their outrageous behaviour and riotous fun. In 1964 Baker was considered ‘one of Britain’s great drummers’ by Melody Maker journalist, Chris Welch. While Baker was impressing music journalists, he was also attracting attention from other musicians, one of them being Eric Clapton. The two met, jammed, saw one another play in their then- current bands, added bass player Jack Bruce and formed Cream. In Baker’s own words they created ‘instant magic’ and began touring earning £45 per show, to later smashing box office records previously set by The Beatles.

After Cream, came Blind Faith. Baker and Clapton were joined by Steve Winwood and Rick Grech to make just one album. When Clapton and Winwood left to further their own projects, the remaining members went on to form jazz rock fusion band ‘Ginger Baker’s Airforce’ adding sax, flute, organ and extra percussion to the band.

During a trip to Africa Baker found himself moved and inspired by Nigerian radio. Despite the war zone in that part of the country he was adamant about visiting Nigeria and pushed to set up a recording studio in Lagos. When it opened as ‘Batakota Studios’ Paul McCartney arrived with Wings to record part of his ‘Band on the Run’ album. Music aside, Africa gave Baker a wonderful climate to live in and a healthier lifestyle than that of rock n roll and touring. He discovered his love for polo and rally driving.

Baker’s work with Airforce and friendship with Fela Kuti pathed the way for Baker’s next musical project: to work with African musicians. A live album was recorded in Abbey Road studios under the name of ‘Fela Ransome- Kuti and Africa 70 with Ginger Baker’.

He then went on to form English rock group The Baker Gurvitz Army in which Baker was also involved with providing extra sounds for their debut album. The wheel spins from his Jensen FF were used for their song ‘Mad Jack’. He also rode a wheeled swivel chair backwards down a flight of stairs for a second track on their debut album.

After setting up a second recording studio, this time in North London, Baker formed ‘Energy’. Since then he’s performed at various live events such as Verona’s Percussion Summit and his own .

This event will begin at 8pm but our Picturehouse Cafe Bar is open earlier for delicious food and drinks.

<![CDATA[Mamane Barka + Etran Finatawa - The Endless Journey 3rd July 2012]]> The Endless Journey is a spectacular multi-media concert bringing together four musicians from two of Niger’s leading internationally known music groups, Mamane Barka and Etran Finatawa.

The Endless Journey is a live music show, a documentary film and a photographic exhibition. This is the story of these acclaimed musicians from Niger, West Africa, who travelled the world promoting their nomadic culture and desert blues music only to realise that whilst they were away their children were turning their back’s on their cultural heritage. So they took a desert road trip to try to reinvigorate the tradition for a new generation. German photographer and film-maker Jean Molitor accompanied them and the supporting exhibition and documentary film are a new dimension to this fascinating and stunning live performance.

The musicians are Mamane Barka and Oumarou Adamou who toured the UK in 2010 and Alhousseini Anivolla and Bammo Agonla from Etran Finatawa who have spent the last 7 years performing world-wide. In this new collaboration their hypnotic musical groove evokes the breathless heat and shimmering horizon of the Sahara bringing together the electric guitar beloved of Tuareg musicians, the haunting vocals of the Wodaabe, the rippling strings of biram master Mamane Barka and the instinctive hypnotic percussion of Griot Oumarou Adamou.

The Endless Journey is presented as part of the We Face Forward music programme. Look out for other events across other Manchester music venues that include Afro Cubism (3 June), Kanda Bongo Man (15 June), Jaliba Kuyateh and Kumareh Band (29 June) and Femi Kuti (4 July tbc).

This performance is part of We Face Forward, a season of contemporary art and music from West Africa, celebrated across Manchester. We Face Forward is part of the London 2012 Festival.

<![CDATA[Batucada Sound Machine + Global Grooves Club Night 30th June 2012]]> Global Grooves and Band on the Wall present the incredible New Zealand samba reggae funk band followed by the Global Grooves DJs spinning it out loud until the early hours.

Batucada Sound Machine began in 2003 when five drummers met, once a month, in a dimly lit nightclub in Auckland, New Zealand, to experiment fusing Brazilian batucada rhythms with Pacific soul. Before long, a diverse group of talented musicians gravitated towards the infectious music and a band was formed. Since then, BSM has continued to experiment, not just with Brazilian, but also Cuban and Afro-beat rhythms, adding hip-hop, carefully crafted percussion, slick horns and soulful vocals.

Word of mouth soon spread about their blistering live performances and before long BSM were billed at numerous well-respected events including WOMAD (UK and NZ), the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and many of Australia's biggest and most respected music and arts festivals. Catch this incredible band at this special Manchester concert and dance ya socks off into the early hours at what promises to be the summer party of the year.

<![CDATA[Jaliba Kuyateh and The Kumareh Band 29th June 2012]]> Jaliba Kuyateh is widely regarded as Gambia's greatest modern master of the Kora - one of Africa's most beautiful and complex instruments. With a wonderful sound - loosely resembling that of a harp - it features 21 strings (traditionally played with both hands in a style similar to flamenco and delta blues guitar techniques) - its joyous and hypnotic polyrhythmic sound is the signature of many West African musics.

Jaliba Kuyateh was born in Niamina Dankunku Village in the Central River Region in 1957. As a son of the late great Kora Player Kebba Sunkung Kuyateh, he learnt to play at a very early age. His mother Aja Bakoto Mbye also contributed immensely in the development of this great musician, while Jaliba’s Grandfather, Wandifeng Jali was considered the best Kora player of his time. Performing here with the Kumerah Band, this is an unmissable night in the magical company of one of West Africa's most admired artists.

<![CDATA[Terri Clark - Roots and Wings Unplugged 24th June 2012]]> AEG Live presents one of country music's biggest and most-loved artists at Band on the Wall, Manchester.

To the casual fan, Terri Clark is a staple when it comes to listing off female country artists they’ve heard of. For the rest of us, beyond the millions of albums sold and an innumerable amount of awards and recognition lies a resilient, real talent.

There is no other artist like Terri. In the seemingly endless debate of “what’s country”, nobody will argue that she remains one of the most influential performers of our time. Even with all her success, you won’t hear her brag about it. “I love letting people know and see that I am just an everyday girl, with a not so every day job, but I don’t feel a “disconnect” with my audience just because I am on the stage…I feel like we are all there to have a great time.”

<![CDATA[Gregory Porter 12th June 2012]]> ADVANCE TICKETS SOLD OUT FOR THIS SHOW - TICKETS FOR MONDAY 11TH JUNE STILL ON SALE. CLICK HERE NOW.

The second of two concerts by the internationally-acclaimed, Grammy-nominated jazz and soul singer live at Band on the Wall. Advance booking recommended.

"A rapidly ascending star with a magnificent blues-baritone voice" The Guardian

“Gregory Porter has most of what you want in a male jazz singer, and maybe a thing or two you didn’t know you wanted.” New York Times

In the short fifteen months since Gregory Porter exploded onto the international music scene with his debut album, Water, he has racked up a continuing stream of accolades and awards. Porter’s Water garnered a Best Jazz Vocal Grammy nomination (a rare feat for a debut recording), rocketed to #1 on both iTunes and Amazon in the UK and soared onto an international array of year-end ‘Best Of’ lists for 2010 in several genres, and established himself as a formidable international touring artist.

Porter’s ascending star is viewed most brightly here in the UK, where he has performed on Jamie Cullum’s BBC radio program, on Later... with Jools Holland, as a featured guest at the London Jazz Festival and as one of two special guests on Carole King’s 2011 BBC holiday television special. UK’s Jazz Wise magazine named Water the #1 Jazz Album of 2011 (the first time a vocal album has achieved this distinction.

"Gregory is the real deal and a revelation in terms of new male jazz singers, but I think that his voice coupled with his songwriting may be the thing that leaves most listeners with their mouths open. There have been many solid singer songwriters coming from under the jazz umbrella of the last 10 years that are mostly brimming with folk and country influences. Gregory is the first that I’m hearing that is squarely coming out of a real classic soul bag (i.e. Bill Withers, Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway) as a songwriter, but with both feet firmly planted in jazz’s soil." Brian Bacchus

"Gregory Porter has a voice and musicality to be reckoned with" BBC

"The next great voice in Jazz.” L'Express

Now touring on the back of his acclaimed second album Be Good, Porter is a disarmingly sincere performer, with a groove that never quits, a voice of incredible virtuosity that's been famously compared in its rich depth to Nat king Cole's, we now invite you to this very special live concert at Band on the Wall with full backing band.

Support tonight comes from the precocious Manchester-based singer songwriter Ruby Ann Patterson.

This event will begin at 8pm but our Picturehouse Cafe Bar is open earlier for delicious food and drinks.

<![CDATA[Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus of Dreams 7th June 2012]]>

Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus of Dreams have been dubbed "the hillbilly Pink Floyd" which is an apt description, particularly if you throw in elements of Incredible String Band, Neil Young, The Band, Bob Dylan, and maybe even some Frank Zappa as well.

Indeed, the band's all over the map melodic avant-folk conjures Tom Petty, Dinosour Jr. and a fuller Buffalo Tom, possessing an exotic instrumental arsenal in addition to standard rock regalia. Equal parts Washington Irving and Woodstock, the band taps a broad palette of styles ranging from dusty Americana ballads to huge Pink Floydesque cinematic anthems. Playing art school roots rock, sometimes folk and quirky Americana, they possess an exotic instrumental arsenal (accordion, cello, mandolin, theremin) in addition to standard rock regalia. Get down for this one - you're in for a real treat.

"The entire root system of Rock Family Trees is embedded in Longo's voice."

<![CDATA[AfroCubism live at The Bridgewater Hall 3rd June 2012]]> The internationally-acclaimed new project from the makers of Buena Vista Social Club. The best of Cuban and Malian musicians combine to form a supergroup for a thrilling, unmissable night at Manchester's Bridgewater Hall.

'One of the most transporting and life-affirming gigs of the year' The Arts Desk

'A joyous, classy, historic affair' The Guardian.

'A cross-cultural tour-de-force' The Times

The original idea for the Buena Vista Social Club was to bring Havana and Mali’s musicians together to record in Havana; the Malians couldn’t make it and so the Buena Vista Social Club became entirely Cuban. Sixteen years later, they tried again; the result is AfroCubism, 13 musicians who put out a riotous mix of traditional African sounds and Cuban beats. The group come to Manchester this summer as part of We Face Forward, a festival of West African art and music that brings the very best of this vibrant region to the UK. AfroCubism play a rare UK gig at the Bridgewater Hall during the festival’s launch weekend. The group includes Grammy award-winner, Toumani Diobaté and Buena Vista original Eliades Ochoa and is, frankly, unmissable.

Special guest support at this Bank Holiday Sunday spectacular is Jali Njonkoling Kuyateh - the Gambian master of the Kora - West Africa's wonderfully enigmatic harp.

'A beautifully balanced mix of two distinctive musical cultures coming vibrantly together' Q magazine

'The top table Afro-Cuban team-up that Buena Vista should have been' MOJO

<![CDATA[Finders Keepers Summer Party ft. The Liftmen + Sam & The Plants live + DJs 1st June 2012]]> New Manchester Review and Finders Keepers Records team up to bring you a psyched-out freakish summer party, featuring two of the Finders Keepers/Twisted Nerve label's finest artists The Liftmen Sam & The Plants live, plus Finders Keepers and New Manchester Review DJs spinning a mix of international psych, funk, freak-rock and rare grooves exclusively on vinyl til the early hours.

Celebrating the release of their brand new LP on Twisted Nerve, Luftwaffe Pond, The Liftmen are taking inspiration from bands like Gang Of Four and The Bush Tetras, while at points presenting an almost jazzy serenity recalling the Chicago school of the nineties... yet just as often this is gleefully ruptured by fuzzed-out motorik detours and Deerhoof-like thrusts of sonic overdrive. Mind-bending and unmissable!

Sam & The Plants, another fine artist in the Finders Keepers stable, are an inspiring acid/psych folk outfit who create otherworldly folk music reminiscent of tripped-out film soundtracks such as The Wicker Man and Valerie & Her Week of Wonders, as well as the avant-garde folk artists of the 60s including The Incredible String Band, John Fahey and Pentangle.

All this plus Finders Keepers and New Manchester Review DJs spinning tunes until late into the night:

Andy Votel / Doug Shipton / David Orphan / Luke J Murray [Finders Keepers / Twisted Nerve]

Simon Webbon [New Manchester Review / Abstract Groove / Band on the Wall]

This event will begin at 9pm but our Picturehouse Cafe Bar is open earlier for drinks and good times.

The Bongolian

This month Craig Charles is delighted to showcase a full live set by The Bongolian, AKA multi-instrumentalist and Big Boss Man front man Nasser Bouzida and his incredible band.

A decade ago Nasser Bouzida disappeared into his studio and created a solo set of recordings which resulted in the birth of his alter ego The Bongolian. Drawing on his influences of Funk, Soul and Jazz Nasser produced an inspired selection of recordings blending elements of grinding percussion and heavy Bongo rhythms.

The eponymous debut ‘The Bongolian’ was released early in 2002 to much critical acclaim, and followed up by the 2006 ‘Blueprint’ and in 2008 by ‘Outer Bongolia’ (which scored a licensing deal in Japan). His most recent release, Bongos For Beatniks, upped the pressure on the funk cooker even more. The albums have become record box essentials for DJs, finding a wide appeal from Dance and Hip-Hop to rare groove and funk 45s fans. Nasser has assembled a high calibre five piece live band with whom The Bongolian have toured USA, UK and Europe. Band on the Wall is delighted to welcome this modern funk hero to Manchester for what promises to be a banger of a night.

"Nasser Bouzida is a man with talent to spare. A Latin-flavoured jazz-funk odyssey" `

<![CDATA[Heather Peace - The Fairytales Tour 26th May 2012]]> Once upon a time, Heather Peace was performing to 20 of her friends in the local pub. A year later and she is one of the UK’s most exciting new female talents performing to a rapidly growing Peace-army at sell-out gigs across the UK.

Her soaring, dramatic vocals share beautiful, honest stories of crap relationships, losing and finding your way again and fighting for new love against stunning jazz soaked piano melodies and pop guitar riffs. The Oscar-nominated Nigel Wright is behind the production of her much anticipated debut album Fairytales, set for release in late spring.

The Fairytales Tour will showcase the finished songs from the album to fans across the UK for the first time; including debut single Better Than You and the title track Fairytales.

Heather’s last UK tour sold out - and with anticipation for this tour riding high, fans are advised to buy early for this very special afternoon concert.
