Our Mission

Inner City Music promotes the discovery, exploration, enjoyment and participation of the music of all cultures, traditions and people. 

We see music as more than just entertainment.

Music can build confidence, improve wellbeing, strengthen communities, create connections across cultures and provide opportunities for personal growth. Whether someone is attending their first music session, taking part in a community project or developing a career as an artist, music can be a powerful force for positive change.

Our work reflects Manchester’s rich musical heritage and the cultural diversity of the communities that make our city great.

Our Approach

Everything we do is shaped by a simple belief: that music-making should be welcoming, creative and enjoyable.

Participation First 

We believe everyone has musical potential. Our programmes are designed to be inclusive and accessible, creating opportunities for people to take part regardless of previous experience. 

Learning Through Creativity 

We focus on creative, participant-centred approaches that encourage exploration, curiosity and self-expression. Music should be engaging, playful and centred around the interest and experiences of participants. 

Sharing Traditions 

Many musical traditions are passed down through singing, listening, movement and collective participation. We embrace these approaches by encouraging learning through aural practice, collaboration and cultural exchange, celebrating music from many different communities and traditions. 

Learning Together 

We value peer learning and shared experience. We believe people often learn best from one another, whether that’s young musicians sharing skills, artists working alongside communities, or participants supporting each other’s creative development. 

Music as a Social Experience 

Music brings people together. Many of our programmes are built around collective music-making because we believe creativity flourishes in supportive environments where people can collaborate, connect and build lasting relationships. 

Strong, Compassionate Leadership 

Our artists and facilitators are selected not only for their musical expertise, but for their ability to create welcoming, supportive and inclusive environments where people feel valued and encouraged to participate.
