John Smith 30th April 2010

Guitarist, singer and song-writer John Smith got his first big break in music while a student in Liverpool. He was working as a steward at the International Guitar Festival and at the last minute took the place of an entrant to the guitar competition who had failed to turn up. Smith won.

Born in Essex in 1983, he moved to a fishing town in the West Country as a small child. Brought up in a home with classical music and blues, he got a guitar of his own for his 11th birthday — and became addicted to self-learning the intricacies of the instrument. Subsequently he spent several years working on the road – touring with the late John Martyn and accompanying Davy Graham on his final tour. He has also supported John Renbourn, David Gray, Martin Carthy, Jools Holland, Tunng, and has shared the stage with Cara Dillon, James Yorkston, Martin Simpson and Ben Ottewell.
