Cory Henry interview: The Funk Apostles’ sound and the lyrics of Marvin Gaye
Cory Henry is known for his work with groundbreaking jazz fusion outfit Snarky Puppy, whose sound is steeped in jazz and funk, with heavy influences of rock, gospel and world music. His keyboard and organ work has been crucial to that band’s sound, and with his own outfit The Funk Apostles, a selection of incredibly talented US players, he is exploring further reaches of music. Electronics and synthesis, vocoders and vocals all find their way into a sound which is underpinned by two drummers, ensuring there’s always a solid rhythm at the core of their compositions.
Cory Henry discusses the sound of his band, their musical interests and his own passion for the lyrics of Marvin Gaye, sitting down with us after a sell out show at Band on the Wall.
