American Saxophonist Jim Pepper and South African drummer Brian Abrahams co-led their quartet in a performance at Band on the Wall on 5th September 1991. Abrahams had been playing in Ekaya, the group formed by Abdullah Ibrahim, since 1988 and Pepper had worked with such artists as Don Cherry, Mal Waldron and Naná Vasconcelos prior to this project.

Pepper, who had Kaw and Creek heritage, was known for combining elements of Native American music with jazz, an idea that Don Cherry and Ornette Coleman reportedly convinced him to pursue.

This was to be Jim Pepper’s only performance at Band on the Wall, before his premature death in 1992.
