Jazz vocalist Dwight Trible released a new song, What the World Needs Now Is Love last week, the first from his forthcoming collection entitled Inspirations, featuring Matthew Halsall. The release comes just in time for his and Halsall’s spring tour, which sees them stopping at Band on the Wall on 4th May after a two-night residency at Ronnie Scott’s.
What the World Needs Now Is Love is propelled by pianist Taz Modi and an arrangement evoking the spiritual, with intermittent percussive rattles and Gondwana Orchestra harpist Rachael Gladwin providing the track with a sweeping, ethereal quality. Trible’s commanding voice; one with tremendous depth, a trembling vibrato and power in the lower register, similar to that of Leon Thomas or Kevin Mahogany, is unforgettably emotive. He transmits a message with the desperation of Syl Johnson’s Is it because I’m black?, calling upon sisters and brothers to see the need for an injection of love in society. Cutting loose off the back of Halsall’s trumpet solo, you feel the hairs on the back of your neck responding to his intensifying phrases.
