Miles Davis: Apollo, Manchester, 1989
Information
"Miles played 2 nights In April that year, this was taken on the first night. On the second night I just listened.Tommy Smith was the support. If I remember correctly this was because Miles and his band had been delayed travelling. I never thought I'd see Miles, let alone photograph him, which I did twice, he played Glasgow and London the year after. This was my first shoot at a concert by one of the major jazz artists and the images gave me the break I needed to get accreditation to eventually photograph jazz worldwide.
It was much more than that though, Miles Davis is one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century whose connection with so many other great artists is simply staggering.
Bird, Monk, 'Trane - Jimi and Miles almost recorded together - imagine that. I felt they were all right there with him that night. No pressure." William Ellis, 2011
