Dizzy Gillespie: Theatre Royal, Glasgow, 1990

£9.95

Information

"I was fortunate to meet Dizzy very briefly - no picture, frankly I was speechless, just smiled.

The concert was with his The United Nations Jazz Orchestra at the Theatre Royal, Glasgow in 1990 - an all-star band with James Moody, Paquito D'Rivera, Arturo Sandoval and Claudio Roditti.

One of the few times I've needed to use a 300mm lens - in fact I used it for all the pictures that night. Black and white, colour negative and transparency film. Dizzy was one of the first - if not the first to bring Afro-Cuban influences to bear on American Jazz - a black and white version of Dizzy playing is in the collection at the Jazz Café, Havana.

A short story comes to mind...

A friend was telling me he saw Dizzy playing - in the 70's I think. After the concert he went for an Indian meal before taking the train home - after dinner he walked out of the restaurant and bumped into Dizzy and the band further up the street, got chatting and was invited to join them for a Chinese - so he did of course.

Says he has never been so full in his life - stories, jokes, food and one or two drinks. He had to sleep at the station - the last train had gone." William Ellis, 2011
Equipment: Nikon F3, 300mm lens.
